Former addict Matt Willishas nightmares he’s relapsed regularly.
The Busted singer/bassist recently celebrated eight years of sobriety but admitted he still has night terrors that he’s relapsed again. Speaking with former Soccer AM star Tubes for his podcast On The Mend, Tubes asked if he still “sometimes has nightmares about being back on the alcohol?”
And Matt replied: “Oh yeah, drinking and using dreams I call them, yeah all the time. Well not all the time, but occasionally, yeah it scares me.”
Tubes shared his own experiences adding: “I wake up and that really fu**ing s**ts me up badly, and I don’t know why that happens but sometimes I truly wake up and think I’ve had a drink.
“It’s horrible, it just brings back all those memories, everyone being upset and the pain I caused, then your eyes open and its that realisation of it was a nightmare.”
After years of hiding the extent of his addiction troubles Matt now feels he has to be completely transparent with wife Emma Willis, who he hosts Love Is Blind UK with, but she’s bored of him yapping on now.
“My wife is bored to death of me telling her everything, but I can’t keep a secret, I can’t keep anything, if something happens I have to tell her straight away.
“I don’t wanna have that feeling inside of me any more that I am keeping anything back.”
Matt added he was “amazing” at lying before sobriety but is a “terrible liar” now.
The 42-year-old recently shared a post celebrating his eight years of clean living insisting he looks on sobriety differently now, he wrote: “This one feels different. It marks the same length of time I had before my last relapse… and this time I know I’m in a completely different place.”
Originally he was scared to tell people he was sober, Matt explained: “I didn’t really wanna tell anyone as I was scared of relapsing because I relapsed so many times.
“I said I would never do it again and I fu**ing done it again, I had broken that promise so many times and so I was scared of putting it out there because I was scared I would do it again and everyone would go ‘ha!'”
