Sex scenes too wild for Hollywood – orgies, full-frontal and oral sex controversy

Sex scenes are often a touchy subject in the film industry – what can or cannot be shown, what is deemed appropriate and what is deemed too much.

However, some experimental filmmakers have decided to disregard all the rules and shock audiences with some of the wildest sex scenes in Hollywood history.

Unsimulated oral sex, masturbation and intercourse can be seen in some of the industry’s most controversial flicks.

The Brown Bunny

This 2003 drama is full to the brim with sexual scenes and shocking sights as Chloë Sevigny plays Daisy, the main character’s former lover.

The film follows a motorcycle racer on a cross country trip who cannot shake the memories of his former lover.

Throughout the experimental film, Sevigny performs full frontal oral sex on the film’s director Victor Gallo, who was also her former boyfriend.

Sevigny’s unsimulated act caused huge controversy and there was a complete uproar after it was released.

The Brown Bunny premiered at Cannes Film Festival and the scenes were so shocking that esteemed film critic Roger Ebert branded it the worst film in Cannes’ history.

Chloë’s sex act went on to become one of the most controversial X-rated scenes in film history.

Stranger By The Lake

Described as an “erotic thriller drama,” Stranger By The Lake follows Franck as he regularly visits a nude beach and makes friends.

One evening, the main character sees Michel drowning another man in the lake and, although concerned about his new friend, he is unable to shake his attraction.

Shockingly, almost every shot of this film sees a naked body and much like The Brown Bunny, it also includes unsimulated sexual acts.

Oral sex, masturbation and other far-from-PG acts are shown, which meant that the film was not released in many countries due to laws regarding homosexuality.

As expected, Stranger By The Lake was met with huge criticism but was met with overwhelmingly positive reviews.

Rotten Tomatoes gave the 2013 film a whopping 94% out of a possible 100%, with an average score of 7.75/10.

Roger Ebert branded it the “sexiest and most elegant thriller in years” after its release, which saw it receive a very strict rating in many countries while the United States left it “unrated”.

Nymphomaniac

The all-star cast regularly get naked on camera

Lars Von Trier’s erotic art film caused shockwaves after its release with an all star cast, including Charlotte Gainsbourg, Stellan Skarsgård, Shia LaBeouf, Christian Slater, Uma Thurman and Willem Defoe.

The film sees Joe, a self diagnosed nymphomaniac, recall her sex life to a man who takes her in and cares for her after a savage assault.

Split into two films, both feature full frontal nudity and sexual scenes while covering harrowing topics as Joe reflects on her sexual endeavours and questionable behaviours.

One scene shows a young Joe and her friend attempting to seduce a man on the train in an attempt to “win a bag of sweeties,” while later in Joe’s adult life, actress Charlotte Gainsbourg is shown completely naked many times.

The promotional posters for the film featured many of the characters with their mouths wide open in pleasure while a trailer featuring some of the film’s more sexual scenes was also released.

During its opening weekend, Nymphomaniac was banned in Turkey by their national cinema board.

Irréversible

Gaspar Noé’s shocking psychological thriller was released in 2002 and stars Monica Bellucci as the main character.

Alex was brutally raped and the film is shown in reverse chronological order to add to the suspense as two main attempt to avenge her.

The tense atmosphere is upheld by the extremely long shots used to create a claustrophobic feel, as though there is no end to what the viewer is watching.

The graphic portrayal of the attack meant that Irréversible received huge criticism and Ebert branded it a “movie so violent and cruel that many people will find it unwatchable”.

It received an R rating which was later challenged twice, but it went on to have a successful theatrical run.

Brokeback Mountain

Jake Gyllenhaal, the late Heath Ledger, Anne Hathaway and Michelle Williams all star in one of the most iconic films of all time – Brokeback Mountain.

Released back in 2005, Brokeback Mountain follows two cowboys as they fall in love while working together.

Heartbreakingly, the pair struggle to accept their sexualities and fear the opinions of those around them and both go on to pursue unfulfilling relationships with women.

Brokeback Mountain’s steamy scenes meant that it received mixed reviews, but overall audiences fell in love with the characters and their tragic story.

The love story won three Oscars but despite this huge win, cinemas in Utah banned Brokeback Mountain due to the sexual scenes.

BBC also reported that China removed the film because of the homosexual storyline.

Eyes Wide Shut

Kubrick’s final endeavour follows a truly complicated chain of events

One of Stanley Kubrick’s weirder projects, Eyes Wide Shut stars Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman as a married couple that become entangled in an unnamed secret society based around sex.

Not for the faint of heart, this erotic thriller will keep you guessing right until the final moment – and most likely still leave you confused.

Kubrick died six days after he showed Warner Bros. the final cut of the movie and famously dubbed it his “greatest contribution to the art of cinema”.

Full of seduction, nudity, sex scenes and wild stories, Eyes Wide Shut is a wild ride for any viewer.

It features scenes of full frontal nudity and an orgy sex montage that lasts for four minutes, but a whopping 24 minutes of footage was cut from the film.

Allegations say that some of the ditched footage included child sacrifice that occurred at the orgies, while others say that there was paedophilia involved.
