The Lost Boys cast unrecognisable 36 years on as they spill secrets of iconic 80s film

The Lost Boys icons Corey Feldman, Jamison Newlander and Jason Patric looked incredible as they an appearance in the UK – over 36 years since the Hollywood horror classic was released.

Corey and Jamison played The Frog Brothers in the 1987 film, which saw Jason’s character Michael turned into a half-vampire after meeting a gang of the undead, led by Kiefer Sutherland’s vampire David.

The three stars took to the stage as part of a special Q&A at Comic Con Liverpool on April 1, 2023, where they answered questions from the audience and spilled some behind the scenes secrets about the making of The Lost Boys.

The cast and audience also paid a sweet tribute to the late actor Corey Haim, who played Michael’s younger brother Sam in the film.

Corey died at the age of 38 years old on March 10, 2010, with Comic Con Liverpool host leading the stars and audience in the tribute as he pointed towards the empty seat on the sofas that the cast were sitting on.

The host said: “You’ll notice that there is one missing down on the end, so before we kick things off, we’re going to send out a massive tribute to our missing icon that is truly, truly beloved.

“Ladies and gentlemen, please give it up for the memory of Corey Haim.”

Corey was just one of a number of film icons to have starred in The Lost Boys, which also starred Kiefer Sutherland Alex Winter, Brooke McCarter and Billy Wirth as the famous gang of vampires, alongside Jami Gertz, Dianne Weist, Chance Michael Corbitt and Edward Herrmann.

Along with sharing a few of their favourite lines from the film, including Corey’s “the blood sucking Brady Bunch” and Jamison’s quip to Sam, “Kill your brother. You’ll feel better,” the cast also shared some behind the scenes glimpses including the hardest scenes to film – and the moments when they could not stop laughing on set.

Alan Frog star Jamison revealed he found the bathroom scene with Brooke McCarter’s vampire Paul the most difficult to film, saying: “Corey and I had to sit in that slime for like three days, taking different shots and different angles.

“For me that was the hardest part. It’s a tribute to how amazing it was, but that was the hard part being in the slime.”

Corey also revealed a secret about the slime in that scene, which they called “vampire blood,” as they addressed the supposed ‘rivalry’ between the Twilight fandom and Lost Boys fandom.

The vampires in Twilight were known for sparkling in the sunlight, unlike the vampires in The Lost Boys, but talking about the Twilight Saga, Jamison explained that the cast have “a lot of love and respect” for the films.

However, when asked about whether vampires should sparkle, Corey revealed a little known secret, saying: “I know Twilight gets all the credit for the sparkly vampires, and we’re supposedly the OGs, but you know what? There was actual glitter used in the mix of the slime.”

He continued: “There was glitter in the the slime that we called vampire blood, so infact, our vampires were sparkling first.”

From the hardest scene to film to favourites though, as Corey and Jamison explained that they enjoyed filming the cave scene where Sam and the Frog Brothers discover the vampires for the first time – as well as the famous dinner scene with Max.

Jamison said: “The one thing I’m remembering was when Diane, the mom, was like ‘Edgar and Alan Frog?’ and we’re trying to get that [head nod] at the same time. We just kept cracking up. My voice cracked and then you laughed.”

Corey replied: “Yeah I remember that. There was a lot of uncanny laughter, raucous laughter for no reason at all.”

Jamison explained: “Joel [Schumacher] hated it,” before imitating the late, great director saying: “You’ve got to get this together!”

Corey smiled, adding: “We were 15 year old kids and Diane is just a comedy genius.”

Looking back on making the film, Jason added: “It was a fun set because everyone was young and we were just doing what we wanted to do.”

After making The Lost Boys, the cast got to keep their costumes – including Michael’s leather jacket and sunglasses – with generations of fans recreating the outfits as they questioned the film’s beloved actors as part of the Q&A.

Asked why the film is still so iconic after 36 years, Michael actor Jason Patric credited the cast and director Joel Schumacher with creating something “unique,” and explained why the success of The Lost Boys is so hard to copy.

“It’s really well made,” said Jason, adding: “It’s shot by a famous cinematographer named Michael Chapman who has since departed. He shot Raging Bull, he shot Taxi Driver. In 1986 you don’t get that guy making a teen vampire movie.

“Of course Joel Schumacher getting all these actors together and giving them all this freedom to create their characters.

He continued: “Since it hadn’t been done before a movie like that, everyday you were creating something, so now someone tries to copy certain things and it just doesn’t work. So there’s a unique blend of very talented people who put something together that was really unique.

“I will say Joel was great at hiring amazingly talented people and letting them do their thing. That mix made it great.

“I don’t think anyone thought it would basically become The Wizard of Oz of horror movies and everyone watches it twice a year – but I really do believe that it was Joel getting these very talented people.”
