The suspect was charged with 31 years in prison but rumours suggested he was innocent because another man committed suicide in the local area, just after the incident.Tests reportedly revealed that he had the same blood type as the suspect by suffered from erectile dysfunction, to the police thought he could not be the rapist.Ghibli fans have noticed that the girls’ names – Satsuke, which is Japanese for May, and Mei – reference the date of the attack.There are also a number of clues that My Neighbour Totoro is set in the Sayama Prefecture. These include a tea shop named Sayama Tea and the name of a hospital, which is almost an exact translation of a hospital located in the real life city.Film fans believe they’ve spotted links to the chilling case throughout the filmThe adorable Soot Sprites play with the young girls, but reportedly in Japanese folklore the creatures are actually seen before death.Later in the film the children meet the Cat Bus, but look closer and one of his stops translates to Path To The Grave.Some have also theorised that Totoro is actually a death god. The song states that he is only visible to children, but Kantu cannot see him.Instead, this could indicate that Totoro is only visible to those already deceased. The theory implies that Mei drowns in the river while looking for her sister, which is a chilling parallel to the Sayama case – the 16-year-old girl’s older sister committed suicide after attempting to track down her lost sibling.The Cat Bus stops at a place called Path to the GraveOver on Reddit, fans of the film have pointed out the similarities and one person wrote: “The film includes a few details that suggest a connection to a real-world incident, but the creators have come out and said it’s coincidental.”Another person debunked the claims, writing: “Some people like to make up edgy dark theories about simple family movies.
