Lorraine Kelly breaks down in tears over message from mum as they are separated

Lorraine Kelly broke down in tears during the first-ever Christmas Day edition of her ITV talk show after her mother made a special appearance with a sweet festive message.

The TV presenter, 61, has been unable to see her mother, Anne, due to the pandemic but she virtually popped up during the Christmas episode of Lorraine.

An emotional Kelly told co-stars Dr Hilary Jones and fashion expert Mark Heyes: “I wish I could see them, it’s terrible isn’t it? I haven’t seen her for ages.

“Everybody is the same though. Zoom calls galore today. We will see each other. It’s like we keep saying.

“We have to scale it down for this year but wow are we going to make up for it next year? My wee mum, that was so lovely.”

Also making an appearance on the festive programme was pop icon Kylie Minogue, who said while Christmas for her is different every year, she usually goes “decoration crazy… you’ve got to let yourself go crazy at Christmas time”.

The 52-year-old singer is spending Christmas Day with her boyfriend Paul Solomons, the creative director of British GQ magazine.

She said: “Paul and I, Christmas tree, food, TV and movies. It’s going to be very emotional to be able to call back home and be able to celebrate with my family at a distance, but celebrate nonetheless.”

Kylie, who revealed Scrabble is one of her festive traditions, said people deserve to let their hair down after a stressful year.

She added: “This Christmas of all Christmases, I think if you want to dress up, knock yourself out, you deserve it.”

Also appearing on the show were Bake Off star Matt Lucas and singers Michael Ball and Alfie Boe.

Lorraine is not the only ITV daytime show airing on Christmas Day as Good Morning Britain and This Morning are also set to appear on our screens.

Before Lorraine spreads some Christmas cheer, Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid will relive the moments created by the real stars of 2020 on Good Morning Britain from 6AM.

The dynamic duo will celebrate Covid heroes up and down the country, from the likes of Captain Sir Tom to the incredible staff of the NHS who saved so many lives.

Then at 10AM, Phillip Schofield, 57, and Holly Willoughby, 39, will be hosting a special episode of This Morning on Christmas Day.

The news was revealed by the channel’s boss Kevin Lygo as he revealed an action-packed Christmas line-up in a special video earlier this month.

He explained: ‘In a festive first we’ll be showing one-off specials of our hit daytime shows on Christmas Day itself – Good Morning Britain, Lorraine and This Morning.

ITV will broadcast a host of Christmas specials this December including Celebrity Juice, The Chase, Tenable, The Savoy At Christmas and Gordon, Gino and Fred.

The channel is airing the popular programmes as it hopes to bag the festive ratings crown in its ongoing battle against the BBC.

Lorraine continues on Christmas Day from 9am on ITV
