Prince Charles and Camilla used secret nicknames for each other while with Diana

In The Crown season 4, viewers are given a deeper insight into the love triangle between Prince Charles, Camilla Parker Bowles and Princess Diana.

One detail viewers might be surprised to know is that Prince Charles and Camilla had secret nicknames for each which predated his relationship with Diana.

In The Crown, Camilla refers to Charles as Fred and herself as Gladys during a lunch with Diana..

Later in the episode, Diana finds blueprints for a bracelet where the letters G and F are engraved.

The reason why they use the secret pet names Fred and Gladys, is because they are characters from The Goon Show.

Prince Charles and Camilla had been jokingly calling each other the names since they started dating in their 20s.

The Goon Show, a British radio comedy show on BBC, was one of Prince Charles’ favourites, and he bonded with Camilla over their love for it.

The Goon Show started in 1951, but lasted less than a decade, and ended in 1960. Fred and Gladys were two regularly featured characters.

This is the pivotal moment in The Crown where Diana realises Charles is still in love with his ex girlfriend.

While The Crown does take some liberties when it comes to storytelling, this actually did happen.

Weeks before Charles and Diana’s wedding in 1981, Diana found the actual bracelet in the office of one of Charles’ employees.

Diana told her biographer Andrew Morton in 1997: “I walked into this man’s office one day and said, ‘Ooh, what’s in that parcel?’ And he said ‘Oh, you shouldn’t look at that’.

“So I opened it and there was a gold chain bracelet with a blue enamel disc.

“It’s got a ‘G and F’ entwined in it, ‘Gladys’ and ‘Fred’ – they were their nicknames.”

The Crown season 4 is now available to stream on Netflix
