Ken Spears has died aged 82 it has been announced.
The heartbreaking news comes just three months after his animation partner on Scooby-Doo, Joe Ruby passed away.
It’s been reported that Ken’s cause of death followed “complications related to dementia”.
Ken’s son, Kevin Spears revealed that the star passed away on Friday, November 6.
Speaking to US publication, Variety, he said: “Ken will forever be remembered for his wit, his story-telling, his loyalty to family, and his strong work ethic.
“Ken has not only made a lasting impression on his family, but he has touched the lives of many as co-creator of Scooby-Doo. Ken has been a role model for us throughout his life and he will continue to live on in our hearts.”
Born Charles Kenneth Spears in Los Angeles, California, he got his first break in the industry when he was hired by William Hanna’s production company in 1959 as a sound engineer.
He later met pal Joe Ruby who he went on to work together on shows such as Scooby-Doo, Dog Wonder and Dynomutt after they founded Ruby-Spears Productions.
The iconic due also produced hits such as Alvin and the Chipmunks and Superman.
They continued to work together up until Joe’s death in August 2020.
Ken is survived by his two sons, Kevin and Chris, five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Since the news of his passing, fans have flocked to social media to pay tribute to one of Hollywood’s greatest.
Referencing some of Ken’s most famous work, one fan said: “Ah, demon dogs… Thanks for the memories – you shaped a lot of my childhood.”
While a second added: “RIP Ken Spears. Joe Ruby only went back in August. RUBY-SPEARS FOREVER.”
“My condolences to Ken Spears loved ones. Thank you, Mr. Spears, for making my childhood brighter with Scooby-Doo,” added a third.
“RIP Ken spears… I loved scooby doo, he was an amazing person who made such an amazing show that I and many others grew up with. Thank you Ken Spears,” tweeted a fourth.
