Coronation Street 'launches new animated series' after coronavirus stops filming

Coronation Street bosses have announced they will launch a new animated series based on the hit soap after filming of the main series was halted due to coronavirus.

In a surprising announcement, the official Coronation Street Twitter account confirmed the news to their 1.7 million followers.

The ITV Corrie account wrote: “EXCLUSIVE: Coronation Street: The Animated Series.

“Experience all the drama, comedy and romance you’ve come to expect from Corrie, but in a way you’ve never seen before!”

The then shared a short advert to promote the new series.

In a longer statement shared on their website, ITV added: “Viewers can experience all the drama, comedy and romance they’ve come to expect from the past 60 years of the Manchester based soap, but in a way they have never seen before.

“The trailer above features the likeness of Kirk and Beth played by Andrew Whyment and Lisa George but over the coming weeks prepare to see all of your Coronation Street favourites, including: Ken Barlow, Gail Platt, Dev Alahan, Sally Metcalfe, Steve McDonald and Carla Connor.”

Fans think the Corrie animation may be an elaborate April Fool by ITV

Meanwhile actor Andrew Whyment said: “This is great fun, we get to continue making Coronation Street in these difficult times without having to actually leave our own homes – which is a win for everybody!”

However, while the move will no doubt be welcomed by fans, others couldn’t help but wonder if it was simply an elaborate April Fools prank.

Replying to the tweet, one fan wrote: “Haha, love this one! Completely forgot to look out for an April Fools from you guys this year.”

Another added: “Happy April fools day Corrie, nearly had me there.”

“It’s an April fools but if this lock down continues I think you should really think about doing this for real to be honest,” a third continued.
