EastEnders viewers were thrilled to see the soap return to their screens this evening, after months of absence.
However, a few eagle-eyed fans noticed a number of extras weren’t wearing facemasks as they traveled around the station in Walford – unlike in real-life crowd situations.
While a handful of extras could be seen with a face mask post-lockdown, certain viewers felt the main characters ought to don them occasionally.
Taking to Twitter, the wondered what had inspired the decision, as one penned: “ Tube station… not one person wearing a mask… FUMING #EastEnders.”
And a second added: “So hang on, Bobby’s washing his hands? Are they acknowledging the Coro? But no one’s wearing a mask?”
And a third chimed: “It’s the lack of masks for me.”
“Why are none of these people wearing masks?” wondered a fourth.
However, the cast made reference to the coronavirus in the episode, as Gray Atkins ominously referred to his isolation with abused wife Chantelle.
After years of domestic violence, Chantelle decided to seek help from a divorce lawyer after the months spent in lockdown tipped her over the edge.
In a sinister twist, Gray installed a tracking device on her phone, as he explained he didn’t like to see her leaving the house again post-lockdown.
Can she flee their marriage before it’s too late?
Viewers were overjoyed to see the castmembers back in action, as many praised BBC for the production values as clever camera angles made social-distancing blend into the background.
One said: “Wow. So great to have #EastEnders back!!”
“Cracking first episode Eastenders! Well done!!!,” added a second.
And a third chimed: “It’s good to have #EastEnders back. Great first episode. It flew by so fast.”
EastEnders continues on Tuesday at 8pm on BBC One.
