Ex-EastEnders star says she's been 'bullied' for sending daughter to private school

Former EastEnders actress Michelle Collins has said she has been “vilified and bullied” on Twitter by “people [she] even knows”, all because she sent her daughter to private school.

Taking to the social media site, the 57-year-old tweeted to her 191,000 followers: “I’m sorry I sent my daughter to a private school because that’s what worked for me and her at the time.

“Education is, was very important to me.

“Am I now going to be vilified and bullied for it?

“I can’t believe the nastiness on Twitter and from people I even know!”

Michelle’s daughter Maia, now 23, graduated last year with a First Class honours degree in history.

The clever lass attended Bristol University, and mum Michelle celebrated her achievement online.

Back in February 2019, Michelle shared a photo of herself with Maia in her graduation robes.

Alongside it, she wrote: “Congratulations my daughter Maia. A First Class honour degree in History, Bristol Uni. Very proud mummy!”

After Michelle revealed the abuse she’d been getting, many of her followers rushed in with their defence.

One said: “Ignore the nastiness and do not ever let anyone bully you over doing what is best for your child! All bullies are cowards and the anonymity of the internet emboldens them.”

A second tweeted: “That is your choice where you send your child to get the best education. It’s none of their business, only yours. Sounds like they need educating.”

And someone else wrote: “Good luck to you and your brave and clever lass. Most people would choose to educate their children at the best school available to them and many make substantial sacrifices to do so.”

Afterwards, Michelle shared a throwback photo of herself from her teens.

She said: “I am fine honestly. I’m a big girl now. I’m a survivor as I was when I was 18 in this pic!

“I don’t let them get me down and I am so lucky that there are also a lot of good, decent, supportive people on here too.”

The actress finished with: “I will no longer apologise for my choices in life.”
