Good Morning Britain viewers erupt as lawyer defends ISIS bride Shamima Begum

Good Morning Britain viewers flocked to Twitter to vent their anger today after Shamima Begum ‘s family lawyer Tasnime Akunjee appeared on the hit ITV show to defend the 20-year-old.

During the segment, Akunjee argued that Begum should be allowed back in the UK to fight for her revoked citizenship and face judgement day in court.

On the flip side, many viewers believe while she was only 15 when she fled to Syria with two friends to join ISIS she knew what she was doing and must never be allowed to return.

Akunjee said: “She was a school girl and went over with two other girls under the nose of British intelligence.

“By definition she was a groomed individual.

“At the time the police said she would be allowed back.”

Last year Shamima gave a string of high profile interviews with Sky News and The Times in which she doubled down and told reporters she didn’t regret joining IS as it allowed her to meet her Jahidi husband.

Begum also said the Manchester Bombing at Ariana Grande’s concert in 2017 was justified as people are dying in Syria.

Venting on Twitter, one viewer wrote: “There is no argument. She is not a victim #shamimabegum #gmb”

“Shame on this lawyer for representing Shamima Begum, #GMB” a second added.

A third continued: “Whoever these judges were that authorised her return need striking off, absolutely disgusting.”

“Will those open the flood gates for Jihadi Jack and the rest of them returning #GMB,” a fourth

Giving his take on the situation, Good Morning Britain host Adil Ray said: “If you are a parent you will have utter shame and disdain for your family member but at the very least you would expect that person to be put through a trial.

“You wouldn’t just say no.

“I think because there isn’t a consensus, there isn’t an agreement so that is why there is a legal system.”

After Charlotte Hawkins flagged the majority of comments coming into the programme called for Begum not to be allowed back to the UK, Ray continued: “We the people either on Good Morning Britain and Twitter can not decide the fate or British Citizens.

“We have a legal system for that.”

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV at 6am
