Roy Hudd dead: Comedian and actor dies aged 83

Comedian and actor Roy Hudd has died at the age of 83, his agent has said.

The Croydon native broke into television in the mid-1960s in sketch series The Illustrated Weekly Hudd and The Roy Hudd Show.

He appeared in a variety of small screen shows over the decades including Dennis Potter series Lipstick on Your Collar, for which he received critical praise, and Karaoke.

During the mid-1990s, he starred in two series of Common As Muck, a drama about a group of dustbin men, alongside Edward Woodward.

Moving into soaps, he made his first appearance in Coronation Street in 2002 as the undertaker Archie Shuttleworth and played the role until 2003.

He subsequently returned for guest appearances until the character’s death in December 2018.

For two years, from 2002 to 2004, Roy starred in the ITV drama The Quest, alongside Sir David Jason and Hywel Bennett.

Racking up the guest appearances, he starred in episodes of New Tricks, Casualty and The Last Detective in 2007, and three years later appeared in BBC dramas Missing and Ashes to Ashes.

Most recently, in 2017, he featured in the ITV series Broadchurch and in July 2019 he appeared as a patient in BBC’s Casualty.

The actor has appeared in many pantomime and variety performances.

In 1977 he starred as Fagin in the West End revival of Lionel Bart’s musical Oliver! at the Albery Theatre.

In 2015, he played his first pantomime dame in Dick Whittington and His Cat, the first show at the then newly renovated Wilton’s Music Hall in London.

Last year, he toured the UK in a production of Oscar Wilde’s play A Woman of No Importance alongside Liza Goddard and Isla Blair.
