Sir Paul McCartney blasts China for 'medieval' markets that 'caused coronavirus'

Sir Paul McCartney has blasted China over the “medieval” wet markets he blames for causing the coronavirus pandemic.

Macca, 77, said the country “might as well be letting off atomic bombs”.

It is believed Covid-19 originated at a live animal market in Wuhan and was transmitted from illegally sold bat meat.

Sir Paul urged China to ban the markets, adding: “Whoever is responsible for this is at war with the world.

“Let’s face it, it is a little mediaeval eating bats… unless you are the Osbournes.”

He then jokingly added “Blame it on Ozzy,” referencing the time the Black Sabbath frontman famously bit the head off a live bat on stage.

The former Beatle, who is on lockdown in East Sussex away from his wife Nancy Shevell, said Britain had come together during a testing time.

Macca confessed he feared the worse, including rioting and looting, as social and economic hardships kicked in.

He said: “A lot of people are pulling together and in a way it is a great thing.” But he described being away from New York-based Nancy during the crisis as “rough”.

And during a radio interview with Howard Stern yesterday he pointed the finger at China for causing the pandemic.

He told the shock jock: “It makes a lot of sense [to ban the markets].

“They [the Chinese government] may be going to do it anyway.

“It may be voices like yours and mine that suggest that this is not a stupid idea, but a good idea for them, not just us.”

Macca said that he would be angry at any pushback, if China argued “that people have done it forever and this is the way we do things”.

He said: “They did slavery forever too. And you have got to change things at some point. Hopefully, someone will call on the Chinese, particularly in this case, to sort something out.”
