Vet on Lorraine angers dog lovers with 'unsafe' peanut butter advice

Lorraine viewers were left horrified this morning as a vet appeared to offer “unsafe” pet advice live on air.

Host Christine Lampard, who is currently filling in for Lorraine Kelly, welcomed Dr Rory Cowlam on to the ITV breakfast show on Tuesday.

The Irish presenter discussed separation anxiety with the vet as pet owners start to return to work as lockdown rules begin to ease in the UK.

One piece of advice offered by the vet involved inserting peanut butter inside pet toys, leaving ITV viewers baffled.

While Dr Cowlam offered the information, he failed to mention that not all types of peanut butter are safe for dogs to eat.

Holding up a toy pet owners can buy as a distraction method, Dr Cowlam explained: “You fill it with a peanut butter or a paste.

“You can even freeze it so it last longer, and that distraction should allow for positive reinforcement when you go to the shops.

“Peanut butter is the best thing in the world for a dog so if should keep the anxiety love.”

Taking to Twitter, one unhappy fan penned: “Christine, please point out that not all peanut butter is safe for pets. If the peanut butter contains Xylitol do not give it to your dog.”

Another added: “Please don’t give peanut butter containing Xylitol to a dog.”

While a third ranted: “Some peanut butters can be lethal for dogs. Wrong info given out.”

The National Peanut Board website states that any “peanut butter that doesn’t contain xylitol (or chocolate) should be fine for a dog”.

It continues: “Regular peanut butter is safe to give your dog as a treat.

“The ingredient that causes the problem is Xylitol, a sugar subsided found in low or sugar-free products.

“If the peanut butter you give your dog doesn’t contain Xylitol, then your furry friend can enjoy it.”

Actor John Barrowman also appeared on Lorraine this morning to chat about his upcoming guest appearance on BBC medical drama Holly City.
