'American Idol' Recap: Garbage Man Doug Kiker Is Eliminated in First Night of Hollywood WeekABC

AceShowbizAmerican Idol” season 18 kicked off its Hollywood Week on Monday, March 16. The first group to perform in front of the judges, Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan, was singers/songwriters included Julia Gargano.

Gargano impressed the three judges with a powerful rendition of “The Joke” by Brandi Carlile. Meanwhile, Marna Michele sang Elvis Presley‘s “Can’t Help Falling in Love” with Arthur Gunn performing “Hard to Handle”. The judges couldn’t get enough of Gunn so they asked for more. Gunn, Gargano and one other singer went to the next round, while Marna and some others were eliminated.

The next group to perform was the pop genre group. Louis Knight performed a stripped down version of “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”, while Robert Taylor opted to sing “Natural Woman”, much to the judges’ likings. Alongside three other singers, Taylor and returning contestant Genavieve Linkowski moved on.

Later, Kay Genyse performed “Ain’t Nobody” while Bilaal Avaz sang Demi Lovato‘s “Stone Cold”. Also among the next performers were Shannon Gibbons, who wowed everyone with her rendition of Kodaline‘s “All I Want”, and Lauren Spencer Smith, who belted out “Because of You”. The judges decided to send Avaz, Gibbons and Smith to the next round.

Performing next in R&B group was Cyniah Elise who sang Adele‘s “All I Ask” that earned her a standing ovation from the judges. Elise moved onto the next round along with Makayla Phillips, who performed “And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going”, and Just Sam, who belted out “Hearts Ain’t Gonna Lie”.

Joining Francisco Martin in his singer/songwriter group were Johnny West and Dillon James among others. The three were sent to the next round alongside everyone else in the group. West’s girlfriend Margie Mays later performed “The Voice Withing” and was followed up by Nick Merico who sang “I Love You More Than You’ll Ever Know”. Kimmy Gabriela, meanwhile, stunned everyone after singing “Say Something. Merico, Gabriela and Mays were heading to the next round.

Meanwhile in the country group, Lauren Mascitti sang a rendition of “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue”. Hannah Prestige earned rave reviews for her performance of “Over You” by Miranda Lambert and Grace Leer brought an on-school country vibe with her performance of “Unchained Melody”. The three and some others were moving on.

Amber Fiedler from soul group opted to sing Andra Day‘s “Rise Up” while Sophie Wackerman showcased her skills by singing “Let It Be”. Jovin Webbb performed next, singing “Make It Rain”. The group also saw garbage man Doug Kiker performing. Unfortunately, he was eliminated while Wackherman, Fiedler and Webbb made it through.
