BBC Breakfast's Carol Kirkwood says terrifying cycling accident was like 'shark attack'

BBC’s weather forecaster Carol Kirkwood has compared her horrific cycling accident to being attacked by a shark as she recalls the terrifying incident that took place last year.

Carol, 59, was knocked off her bike by a car as she was cycling near Slough, Berkshire. The nightmare accident left the presenter with a “badly injured” left knee.

She recently said: “It was cut down to the kneecap and some of my nerves were hanging out.

“I sent a picture of it to my boss and he said it looked like I’d been attacked by a shark.”

“But I had a brilliant doctor in Wexham Park Hospital who sewed me back together again.”

Although she was wearing a helmet at the time, the former Strictly star had to take three weeks off from work at following the catastrophe.

Talking about her confidence now, Carol told The Mirror: “My confidence cycling on the road has gone to pot. I don’t do that now. I’m fearful now of cycling on the road.”

She also said she still has dreams about the awful accident.

Last month the meteorologist failed to hold back the tears when she provided her colleague Louise Minchin and Annie Emmerson with an update on her knee injury.

Speaking frankly on Louise and Annie’s Her Spirit podcast, Carol spoke about the calamity and her current exercise routine to the presenters.

She said: “Because I’ve damaged my knee and my thumb, I haven’t got back into running but I speed walk and that’s my exercise.

“I go for it, probably faster than when I was running! I hope one day to get back on my bike.”

BBC presenter Louise chimed: “You had a really horrid accident. And if you hadn’t of had your helmet on, then things could have ended differently.”

Breathing a deep sigh of relief, Carol then responded: “If I hadn’t of had my helmet on, I would have face planted!

“I have a huge nose as you can see, so my nose hit the deck and had a lovely black bruise on it, but my helmet had a peak at the front and that’s what stopped my face from hitting the ground.”

Following on from the accident, Carol posted a tweet to thank the police who helped her in May last year.

The presenter wrote: “Good to hear you are OK Carol Kirkwood and we wish you all the best with the rest of your recovery.”

Carol is currently promoting her debut romantic novel titled Under A Greek Moon.
