Bridgerton series 2 confirmed as Netflix renew mega hit period drama

Bridgerton will return for a second series, Netflix have confirmed.

The hit period drama series has become one of the stand out shows on the platform after it dropped on Christmas Day last year.

The show, which is created by Chris Van Dusen and produced by Shonda Rhimes, follows the well-to-do Bridgeton family as they try to manage love and power during London’s Regency era.

Confirming the show has been renewed on Thursday, Netflix took to social media to post a tongue-in-cheek statement.

The online message read: “The ton are abuzz with the latest gossip, and so it is my honour to impart to you: Bridgerton shall officially return for a second season.

“I do hope you have stored a bottle of ratafia for this most delightful occasion.

“This author has been reliably informed that Lord Anthony Bridgerton intends to dominate the social season. I will have my pen to report on any and all of his romantic activities.

“However, gentle reader, before you set the comments section alight with requests for more sordid details, know that I am disinclined to report on the particulars at this time.

“Patience, after all, is a virtue. Yours Truly, Lady Whistledown.”

Lady Whistledown is the show’s anonymous gossip columnist whose identity is revealed at the end of the first series.

Netflix are yet to reveal any more details of the second series, though it is thought that production will begin as early as this Spring.

Since debuting on December 25, 2020, Bridgeton has been watched over 63 million times.

This accolade makes it the fifth most popular original series ever to launch on the platform.

Talking about the future of the show, creator Chris said: “This being a family of eight children and there being eight books, I would love to be able to focus and really tell stories and love stories for all the Bridgerton siblings.

“For each character, for sure. I would love that.”

Series one focuses on Daphne Bridgerton and introducers the viewers to the regal world the family inhabit.

Earlier this month Irish actress Nicola Coughlan appeared on This Morning to talk about her first day of filming.

The rising star, 34, plays Penelope Featherington.

Explaining how she fell over in front of the whole crew multiple times due to her high shoes, she told hosts Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby: “It was evident pretty quickly on my first day that I couldn’t walk in these heels.

“So I was walking along during a scene and then all of a sudden with my corset and everything I had no sort of central strength so I completely toppled over and landed on the ground.”
