Coronation Street star Sam Aston says becoming a father was an 'out of body experience'

Coronation Street actor Sam Aston, 28, has described having his first child as an “outer body experience” as he celebrates his son’s first birthday.

The soap star who is best known to fans for playing the legendary Chesney Brown on the cobbles welcomed his first child Sonny with wife Briony last year.

The happy couple had always dreamt of becoming parents but were in shock when their son came six weeks earlier than they originally expected.

Talking about their experience with Ok!, the couple shared their thoughts on parenting and looking after a premature child.

Discussing the birth of Sonny and whether it went smoothly, Corrie actor Sam said: “The night before Sonny arrived we were sitting in the car in the hospital car park eating Domino’s pizza because I wasn’t allowed to take it onto the ward. I genuinely thought she’d be home the next day.

“I woke up at 7am and I was about to take the dogs for a walk and Briony rang me and said, ‘I’m 2cm dilated, you need to come in!’ I was like, ‘What? I need to take the dogs out,’ and she was like, ‘There’s no time!’ By 5.50pm he’d arrived.

“I was able to stay for a few hours before going home. I just sat down with a beer and thought, ‘What just happened? I’m a dad!’ It was so bizarre. It was a whirlwind and felt like an out-of-body experience,” he explained.

After the birth of Sonny, wife Briony had to stay in hospital for an additional nine days to help monitor the baby’s feeding pattern. Due to his premature birth, Sonny was fed by tube as he wasn’t ready to swallow yet.

Sonny also had jaundice so was under the lights on the postnatal ward.

The coronavirus pandemic meant certain restrictions were in place in the hospital, therefore Sam was only able to visit his new born baby for one hour between 6pm-7pm.

Briony described the experience as hard but admitted that she would do it all again tomorrow if she could.

Since his unexpected arrival, Sonny has been doing very well and is currently enjoying baby yoga with his mum. The couple have also said their relationship is a lot stronger since they’ve become parents.

Soap star Sam married his yoga instructor wife Briony in 2019.

The happy couple first met online on internet chat site MSN as young smitten teenagers and romance soon blossomed between the two.

Sam and Briony tied the knot in front of friends, family members and Sam’s soap co-stars at Stock Farm located in Cheshire.

Coronation Street continues Wednesday on ITV at 7.30pm and 8.30pm
