Ex-Coronation Street actor Charles Lawson blasts fame-hungry soap stars in rant

Former Coronation Street actor Charlie Lawson has slammed today’s stars as “fame-obsessed, awful” actors.

The 61-year-old Irish soap legend, who played Jim McDonald, reckons young wannabe stars do not put enough effort into learning how to act.

And he reckons they are instead too focused on just becoming famous.

Charlie, who last returned to the show in 2018 for a brief stint, also warned today’s aspiring soap icons to lose their “bad attitude” if they want to be taken seriously.

The actor said: “If you want to get into acting, stop being obsessed by fame.

“Most young actors I meet are more interested in being famous than practising their craft.

“Throw all that bad attitude away and go to drama school. It wasn’t meant to be easy.

“I watch the actors of today on very popular and celebrated, familiar shows and some of them are just awful. Get in some work and learn your art.”

During his chat, Charlie also revealed he has been rewatching the old repeats of Corrie on ITV3 in a bid to reminisce over old times with co-stars including Simon Gregson, Bev Callard and Sarah Lancashire.

Reminiscing over the good times he and his castmates used to enjoy during his time on the show, the actor added: “It was party, party, party!

“My friendships with Bev, Simon, Sarah Lancashire, Eva Pope and Peter Armitage – they are my fondest memories.

“I’m really enjoying classic Corrie at the minute.”

Charlie’s first appearance on the soap was back in 1989, when Jim moved to the street with his wife and sons, working as a mechanic and labourer.

He faced a number of tricky storylines over the years, from the tragic death of Jim’s daughter Katie in 1992, to a spell in prison in the early noughties.

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
