It has been confirmed that former Slipknot drummer and founding member Joey Jordison has passed away.
His family released a statement giving some detail into how the 46-year-old hugely talented drummer died.
According to the Joey’s relatives he passed away “peacefully” in his sleep on July 26.
Joey’s family released an emotional statement which read: “We are heartbroken to share the news that Joey Jordison, prolific drummer, musician and artist passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 26, 2021. He was 46.
“Joey’s death has left us with empty hearts and feelings of indescribable sorrow.
“To those that knew Joey, understood his quick wit, his gentle personality, giant heart and his love for all things family and music.
“The family of Joey have asked that friends, fans and media understandably respect our need for privacy and peace at this incredibly difficult time,” it continued.
“The family will hold a private funeral service and asks the media and public to respect their wishes.”
No confirmation on the cause of death has been released.
In the mid-2010s Joey was diagnosed acute transverse myelitis which left him unable to walk or play the drums.
Through hard-work, therapy and rehabilitation he was able to beat the neurological disease.
Joey was one of Slipknot’s founding members, playing with the band on their 1999 self-titled debut album.
He also drummed on the 2001 record Iowa, Vol 3: (The Subliminal Verses) in 2004 and on All Hope Is Gone in 2008.
Along with his stint in Slipknot, he also played guitar in horror punk band Murderdolls, as well as founding and drumming for Scar the Martyr from 2013 until 2016.
Before his death, he was playing for Sinsaenum.
Slipknot became one of the biggest heavy metal bands in the world with their trademark gory masks sending fear into the music world.
Despite the gruesome theatrics and chaotic live shows the band were hugely influential and loved across the world by their dedicated fans.
