Fern Britton has spoken about how she found ‘magic’ after the breakdown of her marriage to Phil Vickery.
The couple announced their separation in January 2020 after 20 years of marriage, sharing on Twitter: “After more than 20 happy years together, Phil and I have decided to go our separate ways.
“We will always share a great friendship and our lovely children. We would appreciate it if our privacy is respected at this time. Thank you for your continued kindness and support.”
The couple met on set of cooking show Ready, Steady, Cook, where Phil was a celebrity chef, and went on to tie the knot in 2000.
They share a daughter, Winnie, who is 19, while Fern is also mum to twins Jack and Harry, and daughter Grace, from her previous marriage to Clive Jones.
Now Fern has spoken to Good Housekeeping magazine about her life after the split.
“I’m not afraid of change,” she told the publication.
“The last three years have been very hard; I lost my parents, I lost my marriage. I lost my other home in Buckinghamshire, too, because Phil lives there now and I’m in Cornwall.
“But the magic I’ve found here is incredible. I’ve made some wonderful girlfriends and that’s been a lovely surprise.”
She said there are challenges that come with being single, however.
“Being wholly in charge of a situation and not having someone to discuss it with is a double-edged sword.
“I can say, ‘Let’s blow up the house and build something else,’ and I don’t have to justify it, which is great. But it’s also a big decision – and I have to arrange everything myself!
“I’m not lonely but I’m in this transition period where I’m working out what’s next for me,” she added.
“My approach has always been, head down, keep going, and for the first time in my life, I’m thinking, ‘Hang on, where shall I go now?’ – and that’s quite nice. Suddenly, the world is my oyster.”
It was reported that Phil was growing closer to a ‘sexy shepherdess’ from Yorkshire – Alison O’Neill, who he has reportedly exchanged flirty messages with.
The Sun reported in October last year that the pair were growing close, with a source commenting: “Phil and Alison became good mates. They have very natural chemistry. A few people have been gossiping.”
The pair have shot segments on lambing together at Alison’s 35-acre farm while filming for This Morning.
