Slipknot drummer Joey Jordison has tragically died aged just 46 on Monday in his sleep.
The musician’s family announced the news that while the cause of death remains unclear, it was a ‘peaceful’ passing.
Joey’s family released an emotional statement which read: “We are heartbroken to share the news that Joey Jordison, prolific drummer, musician and artist passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 26, 2021. He was 46.
“Joey’s death has left us with empty hearts and feelings of indescribable sorrow.
“To those that knew Joey, understood his quick wit, his gentle personality, giant heart and his love for all things family and music.
“The family of Joey have asked that friends, fans and media understandably respect our need for privacy and peace at this incredibly difficult time,” it continued.
“The family will hold a private funeral service and asks the media and public to respect their wishes.”
Joey was one of Slipknot’s founding members, playing with the band on their 1999 self-titled debut album.
He also drummed on the 2001 record Iowa, Vol 3: (The Subliminal Verses) in 2004 and on All Hope Is Gone in 2008.
Along with his stint in Slipknot, he also played guitar in horror punk band Murderdolls, as well as founding and drumming for Scar the Martyr from 2013 until 2016.
Before his death, he was playing for Sinsaenum.
There has already been an outpouring of tributes for Joey on social media, with users taking to Twitter to mourn the prolific musician.
“RIP Joey Jordison,” one commented, as someone else said: “This is so sad. Thoughts are with the band, friends and family of #JoeyJordison RIP.”
“Joey was my favorite drummer for so long. His speed & skill is literally unmatched. A sad day for us metal fans. RIP Joey Jordison,” another fan commented.
Slipknot announced it had split from Joey Jordison in December 2013, but didn’t offer a reason for the separation – with Joey releasing a statement that he did not quit the group.
Speaking in 2016, he claimed he was fired from the band without a meeting or receiving notice of “anything from management.”
“All I got was a stupid f***ing email saying I was out of the band that I busted my a** my whole life to f***ing create.
“That’s exactly what happened and it was hurtful. I didn’t deserve that shit after what I’d done and everything I’d been through.”
Joey was diagnosed with acute transverse myelitis several years ago – a condition which causes an inflammation of the spinal cord and damages nerve fibres.
It ultimately meant Joey temporarily lost use of his legs, and feared he would no longer be able to drum.
Joey continued at the time: “They got confused about my health issues and obviously even I didn’t know what it was at first.
“They thought I was fucked up on drugs, which I wasn’t at all,” he claimed.
