On Tuesday’s Good Morning Britain, Kate Garraway was congratulated for her nomination at the National Television Awards for her documentary ‘Finding Derek’, and she says she hopes Derek will be well enough to attend.
Kate, 54, has shared her journey with husband Derek Draper, also 54, as he battled Covid-19.
Co-host Charlotte Hawkins congratulated Kate for her nomination: “Very well deserved!”
Kate said it was a shock: “I didn’t know until I read the papers this morning.”
“So it’s a wonderful thing for the production company and for Derek” she added.
“I was just thinking… I was just looking the ceremony is ninth of September, it says there I think” explained Kate.
“I was thinking, wouldn’t it be wonderful if Derek is well enough to come? That would be wonderful.”
“I was trying to work out the dates and see the logistics of how that might work. But I so hope so. There’s some brilliant people in the category.”
Kate continued: “There’s some fantastic documentaries, I don’t think moment we’ll win, but it would just be lovely for him to be there.”
Guest Amanda Platell added: “It would be so beautiful.”
“I’ll start planning how that might work,” said Kate.
“We’ll say our prayers for you” added Amanda, as Kate thanked her.
The nominated documentary, ‘Kate Garraway: Finding Derek’ followed Kate as she and her family dealt with doting husband and dad Derek falling critically ill for a long time with Covid-19 in March 2020.
He has been on a long road to recovery, and Kate revealed Derek returned home earlier this year.
Kate also thanked viewers for their support and well-wishes, and said the nomination was “a joy for Derek too, letting him know that people care.”
She also said it would mean a lot to every family impacted by Covid and with loved ones in hospital.
