Good Morning Britain loses 40% of viewers since Piers Morgan's explosive exit

Good Morning Britain’s viewership has dwindled since the unexpected exit of host, Piers Morgan.

The presenter, 55, decided to stand down as co-host on the ITV breakfast show after he received harsh backlash over the controversial comments he made about Meghan Markle following her bombshell Oprah interview.

Since his shocking exit, it appears as though loyal Good Morning Britain fans have become less interested in tuning into the weekday show as it’s experienced a 40% drop in viewing figures.

The programme raked in around 800,000 viewers on Wednesday – marking it as one of the lowest figures in previous weeks.

Wednesday’s viewing ratings were also 700,000 below the 1.49million who watched BBC Breakfast.

It’s a colossal drop in audience interaction as the previous week, Piers and Susanna garnered thousands of viewers as they debated Prince Harry and Meghan’s explosive tell-all interview on the show.

In fact, Piers’ controversial rant about the Duchess of Sussex has quickly become the most complained about TV moment ever.

Piers’ departure was announced by ITV the evening after he had clashed with Alex Beresford on-air over controversial comments he had made about the royal couple.

These included comments which cast doubt on the veracity of a number of claims made during the interview, including Meghan’s struggle with suicidal thoughts.

Piers’ furious rant about the Duchess of Sussex has racked up an eye-watering 57,121 Ofcom complaints – making it the most complained about moment ever.

Last week, Ofcom received 41,015 complaints about Piers’ comments which sparked an investigation.

An Ofcom spokesperson said: “We have launched an investigation into Monday’s episode of Good Morning Britain under our harm and offence rules.”

Speaking after his shocking exit from Good Morning Britain after his six-year stint on the show, Piers insisted that he stood by his opinion.

“I believe in freedom of speech; I believe in the right to be allowed to have an opinion. If people want to believe Meghan Markle , that’s entirely their right,” he said.

Piers went on: “I don’t believe almost anything that comes out of her mouth and I think the damage she’s done to the British monarchy and to the Queen at a time when Prince Philip is lying in hospital is enormous and frankly contemptible.”

“If I have to fall on my sword for expressing an honestly-held opinion about Meghan Markle and that diatribe of bilge that she came out with in that interview, so be it.”
