Holby City fans confused as Jason Haynes suddenly returns after going 'missing'

Holby City viewers were confused to see the return of character Jason Haynes on Tuesday’s episode.

Fans of the BBC drama were shocked when the hospital porter and nephew of Serena Campbell returned after he’d been absent for a considerable period.

Within seconds of his return, Twitter was ablaze with comments.

One tweet read: “Jason just randomly appears after, like, a year? #HolbyCity.”

Another person added: “Ah Jason’s back. Where’s he been hiding? #HolbyCity.”

While other fans were elated to see Jules Robertson – who plays the role of Jason – back on screens.

“MY FAVE PORTER! Jason i’ve missed you,” chimed one online user while another said: “So so happy to see Jason back. The wonderful Jules Robertson.”

Jules’ character Jason has Asperger syndrome, making him the first non-neurotypical actor to play a non-neurotypical role.

He previously credited his own autism for being able to act the part so well.

In 2019, Jason found love with Greta (played by Zoe Croft), who also had Asperger’s syndrome on the programme.

There had been many happy times for the pair who were raising Guinevere together, they also had a terrible run of luck.

Greta was hit by a car and her leg was left badly injured.

At the time, Zoe spoke out about the importance of characters with autism being portrayed accurately on television.

Speaking to the Daily Express, she said: “I think it’s incredibly important because I feel like there is just a stigma about it.

“People will expect me to act a certain way or be a certain kind of person, I just think there’s this stereotype that everyone with asperges or autism will be kind of like Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory.

“Whilst that is how some people are, that’s not the be all and end all, it’s called the autistic spectrum for a reason.

“It’s really frustrating when I come across that, and I think it’s great what Holby are doing because they are showing the whole spectrum of people.”

Holby City returns next Tuesday on BBC One.
