Kate Garraway says there are 'huge challenges ahead' for Derek amid Covid battle

Kate Garraway has revealed there are “huge challenges ahead” for her husband Derek Draper as his health battle continues.

The 54-year-old broadcaster was back on Good Morning Britain presenting duty on Friday alongside temporary co-host Alastair Campbell.

At the top of the show, Kate pointed out that strategist Alastair, 64, is an old friend of her husband Derek.

“You know my old man don’t you,” the mother of two asked her co-star.

Alastair, a former spokesperson for ex Prime Minister Tony Blair, replied: “Yes. I’ve worked with him and sometimes against him.”

The communicator went on to ask how Derek is doing following his battle with coronavirus.

Kate replied: “He’s alright, I’ve heard all the stories from him, he’s warned me. He’s very up and down we’re certainly a long way out of the woods.”

Alastair then asked if bringing Derek home was just to bring him home or if it meant that he was on the mend.

Kate replied: “Not because he was better no, being home we’ve seen some things improve definitely having the family around having the children around has provided stimulation and I think the problem is you latch onto the positives which is good because you have to.

“But, there’s absolutely no doubt that there are huge challenges ahead. He knows I’m here with you this morning I told him!”

The GMB star was told by doctors that Derek would be unlikely to recover if he didn’t make progress within two years.

Former Labour lobbyist Derek returned to the family home from hospital in April over a year after falling seriously ill with coronavirus in March 2020.

In her book The Power of Hope, Kate revealed how Derek’s neurologist, known as Dr W, told her “there is very little chance of him making a meaningful recovery”.

Dr W admitted he had never seen a case like Derek’s, so he found it hard to predict an outcome for him.

The former political adviser, who is the father of Kate’s children Darcy and Billy, spent months in a coma and the effects of the virus ravaged his organs.

On multiple occasions Kate was told to expect the worst, and Derek’s heart has stopped on more than once.

An intensive-care specialist also warned the former I’m A Celebrity contestant that Derek might never be the person he was again.

He urged her to be strong and to give the medics time to do their work.

Kate wrote: “I sensed they were trying to wrap things up. But I couldn’t take in what they were saying. I wanted space to take it in. I didn’t want to wrap up on this level of bleakness.”

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV at 6am
