Strictly's Tom Fletcher set for Les Misérables dance after turning musical role down

Tom Fletcher is set to take on the role of Marius in Les Miserables on Strictly Come Dancing this weekend – 10 years after turning the role down.

The McFly star will strut his stuff on the BBC competition alongside professional dance partner Amy Dowden as they take on Musicals week on Saturday night.

Tom and Amy will perform their Couples Choice routine to hit Les Mes ballad On My Own, with Tom taking on the character of Marius while Amy will embody female lead Eponine.

The chart-topper admitted in a chat with the Mirror that he previously had the chance to star in the stage production of the tragic musical, but turned it down due to commitments with McFly.

He said: “I always wanted to play Marius in Les Miserables, I actually got offered the role but I had to commit to do it for six months, and as that meant I wouldn’t have been able to tour with McFly I turned it down.

“But then that was the year Harry did Strictly and Dougie did I’m A Celebrity, so I could have done it after all!”

Musicals clearly run in the family, as Tom’s sister Carrie is currently starring in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cinderella in the West End.

Elsewhere on this weekend’s show BBC Breakfast host Dan Walker will take on the Charleston with his professional partner Nadiya Bychkova, dancing to Good Morning from Singin’ In The Rain.

Tilly Ramsay and Nikita Kuzmin will also take on a couple’s choice dance, to the soundtrack of Revolting Children from Matilda.

Historical all-male coupling John Whaite and Johannes Radebe will perform a Viennese waltz to Chim Chim Cher-ee from Mary Poppins.

Rhys Stephenson and Nancy Xu will take on a jive to the theme from Footloose after their perfect score last Saturday.

AJ Odudu and her partner Kai Widdrington will waltz to Edelweiss from The Sound Of Music

And fan-favourite couple EastEnders actress Rose Ayling-Ellis and her pro partner Giovanni Pernice are set to deliver a quickstep to Love Is An Open Door from Disney’s Frozen.

Meanwhile, judge Craig Revel Horwood, 56, will be missing from the line-up after he tested positive for Covid-19.

Strictly Come Dancing continues with musicals week, Saturday at 6.35 pm on BBC One
