Fans of ITV quiz show The Chase were left in fits of giggles during Monday’s episode of the programme, as one player appeared to get confused between a cult leader and a famous author.
Player Clare was second up to face The Sinnerman, and was handed some decidedly difficult questions during her Cashbuilder round.
When the stunning player was quizzed on which famous author was exhibitied by Artangel at Reading Prison, the stress must have gotten to her, as she quickly jumped in with: “Charles Manson?”
Her guess, unfortunately, was incorrect – as the right answer was actually Oscar Wilde, who was imprisoned there in the 19th century.
Players were outraged by the random answer, and flocked to Twitter to share their disbelief, as one wrote: “CHARLES MANSON?! He’s a bloody career criminal!” accompanied by several cry-laughing emojis.
“That famous author. Charles Manson,” someone else giggled.
As a third viewer penned: “Charles Manson – the American criminal and cult leader – was a celebrated author?”
“Charles Manson the author?!” another incredulous fan posted.
“Still reeling from the woman on #TheChase who reckoned the famous writer held in Reading Gaol was… Charles Manson,” another couldn’t resist adding.
But The Sinnerman was incredibly forgiving, as he told Clare: “It just goes to show that, under pressure, even the best players can get Oscar Wilde and Charles Manson mixed up!”
“It was the mention of prison!” the red-faced Clare insisted.
And as Clare made it through to the Final Chase with money to add to the prize pot, many fans were relieved to see the stunning contestant still in the game.
“Clare, pretty girl!” one said as she took her seat back with the other contestants.
“I like Clare…” another wrote.
But Clare’s wasn’t the only awkward slip-up of the night, as host Bradley Walsh quizzed Sandra on quiz show history.
Her question was: “On which TV quiz show did the word ‘highlight’ appear as the first ever conundrum?”
The answer, of course, was Countdown – but Sandra instead plumped for Have I Got News For You.

“The Have I Got News For You conundrum?” one puzzled fan tweeted.
Regardless, all players made it through to the Final Chase to compete for £21,000 – and it was a pretty strong full house left to compete against The Sinnerman.
Someone, however, had some advice for the gang, as they wrote: “Teams of 4 need to play smart. Sometimes someone buzzes in too quick and gets it wrong when someone else on the team has the answer.”
