Barbara Windsor's widower slams 'gold digger' claims and exposes late star's debt

The late EastEnders Peggy Mitchell star Barbara Windsor’s widower has slammed “gold digger” claims while exposing the actress’ debt.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain on Friday morning (December 9), Scott Mitchell branded himself as “the worst gold digger ever” close to the two year anniversary of Barbara’s death.

The 59-year-old was chatting away to Kate Garraway and Ben Shephard when he explained how he was brutally accused of using Barbara for her money.

With a 26-year age gap between them, with Barbara his senior, Scott explained how when the couple first met people questioned his intentions.

Scott appeared on GMB to speak about the One Million Minutes campaign

But when they got together, the Peggy Mitchell star was actually £1million in debt.

Speaking candidly on the morning news programme, he elaborated by saying: “She had a million pound debt when we met. I must have been the worst gold digger in the world. Really got it wrong there didn’t I?”

He went on: “They all thought who’s this guy who’s this unknown actor. They thought it was me who ended the marriage [her second]. They called me a gold digger.”

He and Barbara married in 2000

Barbara, who died in December 2020, left her husband £4.6million in her will.

Her sad passing came six years after she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, although she did not go public with her condition until 2018, when Scott spoke of it.

In 2019, Scott and some of his wife’s former co-stars from EastEnders announced that they would be running the London Marathon in aid of a dementia campaign – something he plans to do again in 2023.

He shutdown the gold-digging claims

And it was around this time that her husband revealed that Barbara’s health and mental state had been deteriorating, to the point that there were some moments when she no longer recognised him.

In August 2020 Barbara moved into a care home and just four months later she died, aged 83.

Scott was Barbara’s third husband. She was first married to Ronnie Knight in 1964 until 1985.

The starlet then wed Stephen Hollings in 1986 before divorcing in 1995.

And then in April 2000 she married Scott, whom she was happily wed to until her sad passing two years ago.
