Call The Midwife actress Pam Ferris has revealed that riding her clunky bike as Sister Evangelina left her needing a knee operation.
She groaned: “Those bikes were really heavy and my shoes were so big on me that they didn’t allow me to turn the bike because my foot would hit the front wheel.
“Add in darkness and cobbles and puddles with holes underneath that you didn’t know about and it was a risk to life and limb – in my case to my cruciate ligament.”
The star explained: “I ended up having to have an operation on my knee. But I loved it when I was going straight.”
Co-star Jessica Raine, Jenny Lee in the BBC series, admitted that she struggled with her bike too.

She said: “It was so much cycling! When we were in Chatham doing all the exterior scenes those cobbles had pretty deep grooves between them so if your front wheel got caught in one of them it was a nightmare.
“You just had to battle through. When I was cycling along I was always thinking, ‘Is my face juddering and wobbling about, like it does when people go at high speed?’

“Everyone would assure me – ‘No, no, it’s fine, it looks great.’ Basically that was all I was thinking – that and not toppling off!”
The popular BBC show will air it’s series finale on Sunday night after it’s eight million viewers were left in shock after a crash last episode.
Fans saw the characters – played by Jenny Aqutter, 69, and Stephen McCann, 59 – lying injured and unconscious as the credits rolled.

They had been returning from a conference when the train they were travelling on collided with another, after the driver suffered from what appeared to be a brain haemorrhage.
A synopsis for the episode states: “Nonnatus House faces its darkest day after a tragic incident in the heart of Poplar. As the community rallies together, the team must overcome personal anguish to help the injured.”
