EastEnders' June Brown wanted to apologise to Queen after awkward MBE blunder

June Brown has always wanted to say sorry to the Queen after a cringeworthy encounter when the actress went to get her MBE.

The late EastEnders legend, who passed away aged 95 on Sunday, recalled that when she made the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in 2008 for her service to drama and charity, all didn’t go to plan.

In fact, June was so mortified by what went on, she revealed in 2019 that she had considered writing a letter of apology to the Queen.

As June’s name was called out she became flustered and tripped over in front of the royal.

Speaking to Radio Times, she said: “When I was called I tripped on the step in front of her and almost fell over.

“She said something about enjoying EastEnders and for some reason, I replied, ‘I didn’t think you’d see it because it clashes with your dinner’.

“I didn’t even call her Ma’am or Your Majesty, so later I thought about writing to her to apologise. But I suppose at least I made her laugh.”

June passed away surrounded by her family, the BBC confirmed and urged fans to raise a glass of sweet sherry to the telly legend.

Her character Dot Cotton, the chain-smoking laundry manager, was a stalwart of EastEnders since 1985 and appeared in nearly 3,000 episodes.

She was still acting in the soap until 2020 aged 93 before a storyline saw her visiting Ireland for a bit.

Her absence was supposed to be short-lived but June then said in an interview she had “left for good” because her return would have been was a “wet fart”.

June was evidently not impressed with what show bosses had in store for Dot so she decided to quit.

A spokeswoman said: “We are deeply saddened to announce that our beloved June Brown, OBE, MBE, sadly passed away last night.

“There are not enough words to describe how much June was loved and adored by everyone at EastEnders, her loving warmth, wit and great humour will never be forgotten.

“June created one of the most iconic characters in Dot Cotton, not just in soap but in British television, and having appeared in 2,884 episodes, June’s remarkable performances created some of EastEnders’ finest moments.”
