GMB row explodes as ITV commentators 'at each other's throats' in Saudi Arabia clash

Good Morning Britain guests Kevin Maguire and Andrew Pierce locked horns in a heated debate on air over where Britain should source their gas and oil amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

During Wednesday’s (March 16) instalment of the popular ITV morning show, Susanna Reid and her co-host Richard Madeley welcomed the two political correspondents onto the show to get their thoughts on the UK’s relationship with Saudi Arabia.

Boris Johnson is set to meet leaders in the United Arab Emirates later on today to meet with leaders in Middle East in an effort to reduce the UK’s dependence on Russian gas and oil.

And it’s clear to see the difficult decision has divided politicians up and down the country as the journalists clashed on air.

The discussion started as Richard Madeley explained how the Prime Minister had landed in Abu Dhabi for a tour of the golf in an effort to buy the much-needed resources from the oil-rich country.

He said: The future will be renewables and neucs – but at the present we need the oil.”

Andrew quickly interjected: “And it’s better to buy it from Saudi Arabia than Russia because it’s supporting the war in Ukraine.”

Confused by his point of view, Kevin clarified: “So again, just come back. You condemn Putin for killing children, for bombing hospital, for hitting houses, but you don’t condemn Saudi Arabia for killing children, bombing hospitals and hitting houses?”

Determined to ignore his emotional argument, Andrew argued: “The whole of the western world has seen what has been happening in Russia apart from Kevin Maguire it seems, who thinks it’s okay to carry on with that than Saudi Arabia.”

Susana agreed with Kevin as she pointed out: “And to be fair there’s a lot of people who think it’s a double standard.”

Andrew went on to explain: “Well, it is. That’s what happens in the world – it’s real politics. We’ve got to get it [gas and oil] from somewhere and I’d rather get it from Saudi Arabia than Russia.”

Furious with his argument, Kevin fumed in his seat as he sat shaking his head while he aired his controversial opinion on the show.

Before moving on to the next segment, the broadcaster couldn’t help but note that in the current political climate people are forced to “pick your wars and pick your victims.”

Good Morning Britain airs on weekdays from 6am to 9am on ITV.
