Prosecutors and defence attorneys had no immediate comment on the verdict.

Deputy District Attorney Marlene Martinez said in the prosecution’s closing argument: “It is time for the defendant’s reign of terror to end,”

“It is time for the kingmaker to be brought to justice.”

Despite the guilty verdict, the jury was unable to reach a decision on numerous other counts against Weinstein.

Those charges included Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the wife of California Governor Gavin Newsom.

Weinstein was also acquitted of an allegation of sexual battery made by an unidentified woman.

Weinstein was at the centre of the MeToo movement as the Miramax founder faced dozens of rape, sexual assault and sexual abuse allegations in 2017 over a period of 30 years.

Defence lawyers had argued that two of the women involved in the case, Jane Doe 1 and Jane Doe 2, had lied about their encounters with Weinstein.

They further claimed that two others had reframed sexual interactions that the lawyers described were in fact “100% consensual”.

Weinstein’s attorney Alan Jackson made the statement in his closing argument that: “Regret is not the same thing as rape”.
