Dame Joanna Lumley has clarified her connection to the royal family after speculations from the media.
Joanna has often been referred to as a “close friend” of Prince Charles and Camilla, but she took the opportunity to set the record straight on their friendship.
She spoke to Metro.co.uk prior to the Jubilee celebrations and clarified her relationship with the royals.
Lumley said she believes that people would be “foolish” to class themselves as close friends of the royal family.
She explained: “I’m not close friends. The thing is, it’s odd this thing about friendship. I think a friend friend, a close friend, is somebody who you can ring up in the middle of the night. I would not know how to get in touch with Prince Charles, let alone ring him at any time.”
However, the former Absolutely Fabulous star said that she had met the couple in the past and have “always been extremely friendly”: “But I think you’re foolish if you say you’re close friends, because you’re not.”
Joanna is a keen royal supporter and has admitted she has “loved the Queen all her life”.
She even released a book titled A Queen for all Seasons: A Celebration of our One and Only Queen Elizabeth II on her Platinum Jubilee.
However, she is not a big fan of Netflix’s adaptation of the royal story and has spoken out about the dramatisation of the characters.
She shared her opinion on The Crown and said: “I don’t watch it because I know it’s made up. These are real people and suddenly they’re made up to be different people. I don’t think it’s right.”
Joanna recently made it onto the New Years Honours list in recognition of her services to drama, entertainment and charity.
She also revealed that she feels “very privileged” to have been the third anchor for Sky News over the Jubilee festivities.
Over the four day bank holiday weekend, famous faces gathered to celebrate the Queen’s 70 years on the throne, including Diana Ross, Rod Stewart and Ed Sheeran.
Lumley, who has great adoration for the monarch, described the first time she met the Queen as a “pinch me moment”.
