Judge Rinder travelling to Ukraine to bring Strictly partner's grandparents to safety

TV star Judge Robert Rinder is gearing up to travel to the Ukranian border to bring his Strictly partner Oksana Platero’s family to safety, amid the ongoing Russian invasion.

Taking to Twitter, Judge Rinder revealed to his followers that he is preparing to travel to Ukraine’s border on Monday to hopefully meet Oksana’s grandparents.

He took to the social media platform and said: “Oksana Platero my Ukrainian dance partner on @bbcstrictly gifted me so much. Right now her grandparents are a week into their struggle to find sanctuary in a safe country.

“I’ll be trying to meet them on the border next week. They’re just a few of the millions who need us.”

“If they cross into Hungary the next step will be getting them to safety with their family.”

Fans of the popular TV personality were completely taken aback by his gesture, with many praising him and wishing him well on his journey.

One said: “Oh you are such a wonderful, loving, caring kind person my heart goes out to you. Please take care and keep safe, I hope you can meet up with Oksana’s grandparents and they are safe. All the very best, you are a star.”

Another added: “Your picture should be in the Dictionary next to the definition for ‘friend’. I wish you a safe trip, I wish her grandparents safe passage. Our hearts will be with you.”

While a third penned: “Hope her parents stay safe and well and you can help them and many others whilst you are there, incredibly proud of you for going, you sir are the best.”

Robert and Oksana were partnered together on BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing back in 2016, with the couple reaching the quarter-finals.

On Wednesday, Oksana took to social media to make a plea to her followers amid the invasion, writing: “Dear Friends, as you already know, many families are going through such hardship with the war in Ukraine. My family and my cousins, @kateryna_klishyna, family are escaping and close to the border.

“My mother, my 10-year-old brother, and Kateryna’s sister, left their home the morning of March 2nd and arrived to safety March 6th.

“As you can imagine, the journey there was brutal but all that matters is that they made it, and they are safe. We are forever grateful to still have them as we know so many who can’t say the same.

“The rest of our family which include our three grandparents, two who are not able to walk, and Kateryna’s mom and dad are still in danger as they are currently still trying to escape. We are praying that they will make it out of Ukraine and into safety soon.”

She added: “What’s next is unclear, unpredictable, and terrifying. This is where we’d like to ask for any support as they spend their time away from home.

“They will be in need of accommodations, food, and medical attention for quite some time. We are raising money to send to them and keep them in good hands. Anything you can do to help would be much appreciated.”

She signed off with: “From the bottom our our hearts we thank you and please keep our family and the rest of Ukraine in your thoughts and prayers. Oksana and Kateryna.”
