Kate Garraway has learnt to love Derek in 'new way' following horrific Covid battle

Good Morning Britain anchor Kate Garraway has revealed she has found a “new way” to love her husband Derek Draper.

The former political lobbyist, 54, has been suffering side effects from coronavirus, having contracted the virus back in March 2020, subsequently becoming the UK’s longest hospital inpatient before being discharged one year later.

Dad-of-two Derek continues his recovery at the family home in London receiving round-the-clock care and sleeping for around 20 hours per day.

During his fight with the virus, he was placed in a medically induced coma having been moved to an intensive care unit for critical treatment.

Speaking to You Magazine, Kate, also 54, said: “I’m not sure that we’ve ever fallen out of love, but I think a new path is emerging, a new way to be in love.

“He puts huge trust in me, he just says, ‘Whatever you think’, which is wonderful, but I do get quite tearful about it.

“I think, ‘God, I hope I’m worthy of that trust'”.

Kate continued: “But I’ve got his back, that is a relationship in itself, isn’t it?

“How many times do couples have doubts about each other? That’s a positive thing to come out of this, to have that certainty of each other, he and I are very close.”

Sharing her struggles, Kate released a book documenting the heartbreak her family have faced since Derek was initially admitted to the hospital.

The broadcaster also welcomed camera crews into her home and released a documentary, Finding Derek, that later won a National Television Award, with a sequel reportedly in the pipeline.

Last month, the I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! campmate revealed that Derek had been “in and out of hospital” as she updated her Good Morning Britain colleagues on his condition, as well as her reaction to receiving an MBE.

She told anchors Susanna Reid and Richard Bacon: “Actually, Derek has had a bit of time going in and out of hospital recently, so I was actually with him at the time.

“My sister-in-law was in charge of opening letters that looked official and she opened it and said: ‘Oh gosh I shouldn’t have opened this you should have opened this yourself’.”

She explained that immediately Kate decided to say that she would accept an award if she was up for it, which ultimately saw her land a spot on the New Year Honours list for 2022.
