Kate Garraway responds to claim that she 'paraded' Derek ahead of documentary

Kate Garraway responded to a Twitter user who accused her of “parading” her husband in front of the public after he was left unable to move or communicate proper after battling severe Covid.

Derek Draper, 54, was placed into a coma in hospital in March 2020 after catching the deadly virus.

After a year in hospital, he returned home to Good Morning Britain host Kate, 54, and their two children Darcey and Billy – but now requires care 24/7.

Kate opened up about his recovery and her struggles caring for him in documentary Caring For Derek which aired on Tuesday.

Since Derek fell ill Kate has been giving her fans regular updates on his health through the media.

Hours before the documentary was set to air, a Twitter user said they were uncomfortable with the publicity Derek has received.

They said: “I genuinely hope he makes as full a recovery as possible. Sadly I still can’t reconcile how Derek’s alleged inability to communicate ties in with him consenting to Kate parading him in front of the public.

“That’s never sat comfortably with me.”

Kate then retweeted the post and wrote: “If you watch the doc tonight you will see.”

Derek has been left unable to move or speak properly

Kate said at the start of the documentary how she is “very protective about people seeing [Derek] vulnerable, but I’ve talked to him a lot about this”.

She added: “And I think he understands we have to make it real, because this is the reality of life for people that are caring. And it’s the reality of recovering from a life-changing event.”

Derek was asked by a person off-camera if he thought filming would help him and his one-word reply was “yes”.

A preview of the documentary saw Derek and Kate’s children, Billy, 12, and Darcey, 14, rush to the front door to greet their father as he returned from hospital in a wheelchair.

After he was asked if he felt nervous about his Dad returning home, Billy answered: “I’m not really nervous or anything because I can finally complete the [Lego toy] Death Star.”

He added: “I’ve been waiting to complete this until dad gets home.”

Caring For Derek is available on ITV Hub.
