Stormzy opens up on Maya Jama split as he says losing her was like 'actual death'

Stormzy has compared losing his ex-girlfriend Maya Jama to “actual death” in a recent interview with Louis Theroux.

Louis’ new series follows him as he takes a deep dive into famous figures’ lives and he met up with Stormzy to talk about his life and career.

The rapper recalled the year 2019, during which he headlined Glastonbury festival “to wild acclaim” and branded it “the best night of his life”.

However, he also experienced a breakup and in 2020 he completely removed himself from social media.

Louis explained to viewers that Stormzy’s relationship with TV presenter Maya Jama broke down and Theroux proceeded to ask the rapper about their break up.

He explained: “My breakup, that was probably the biggest catalyst for growth as a man. I was like: ‘Ok, you’ve made a mistake, and you [lost] someone you love, someone you cared for, someone that is special to you. That’s probably the biggest loss a man can have. Away from someone passing away, away from actual death, that’s the biggest loss you can have.”

Fans were clearly touched by his comments and took to Twitter to debate whether he still has feelings for the TV presenter.

Louis wanted to know what happened during the breakup

One wrote: “Stormzy still loves Maya,” with a grimacing face.

Another wrote: “The saddest thing is that Stormzy still loves Maya.”

Throughout the documentary he spoke about his family life and touched upon his father.

Stormzy’s father came to him and asked him for money for a car after he hadn’t seen him for a number of years and Louis asked him about the experience.

The rapper admitted that they haven’t sorted things out entirely but that he will work on his relationship with his father.

The rapper was frank and honest during the interview

Later on, Stormzy took Louis to the recording studio and played him music from his upcoming album.

Louis bopped his head in time and as the tracks came to an end, the documentarian praised the rapper and asked him about his new sound.

Stormzy admitted that he would brand it as a “soul” album – “not necessarily soul music,” but music “from his soul”.

When Theroux asked him how fans will react to the new music, Stormzy said that his main focus was that the music was just coming from “how he felt”.
