Singer-songwriter Taylor Swift’s Lover album came out three years ago this week – so it’s only right we take a look at the songs she’s written about her lovers… right?
Known for her heartbreak songs dating back to the early 2000s, Taylor is adored by fans for her gritty, honest and raw song lyrics.
“You kept me like a secret, but I kept you like an oath” – it hurts, doesn’t it? You know, like deep down in your soul? Us too.

With a dating history that has led to Taylor writing some of the most memorable songs out there, it’s about time we filtered through her most gut-wrenching tracks and figure out who they’re all about.
All Too Well – Jake Gyllenhaal
Taylor’s Red album came out in the autumn of 2012, before being re-released in 2021 as a result of her old record label Big Machine not selling her back her masters.
What was originally a song just shy of five minutes long has more recently been a track that comes in at an impressive 10 minutes and 13 seconds.
Although she has never confirmed All Too Well is about Jake, there were always plenty of references in the original track – a scarf and the time of year they dated.
But when the extended version and music video came out – fans thought it was apparent.
With Sadie Sink and Dylan O’Brien having the same age gap in the short film, Dylan looking a lot like Jake, and lyrics like “you said if we had been closer in age maybe it would have been fine” – fans were even more convinced.
Jake was asked about All Too Well when it was re-released last November.
He said: “It has nothing to do with me.
“It’s about her relationship with her fans. It is her expression. Artists tap into personal experiences for inspiration, and I don’t begrudge anyone that.”
Forever and Always – Joe Jonas
Taylor and Joe dated back in 2008 before the Disney heartthrob broke up with her in a reported 25 second phone call.
Clearly not over it, Taylor seemingly penned a few songs about Joe that went on to feature on her Fearless album.
Taylor’s second album Fearless came out in November 2008, and featured hits like Love Story and You Belong With Me.
But speculation has always hinted that Forever and Always is about Joe.
The track was allegedly a last minute addition to the album, which figures, and with lyrics like: Was I out of line?/ Did I say something way too honest, made you run and hide/ Like a scared little boy” – it seems it could definitely be about the fellow singer.
Dear John – John Mayer
Dear John featured on Taylor’s 2010 album Speak Now and was the fifth track on the listing.
Every song that takes the number five spot on Taylor’s albums are renowned by fans as the most heart-breaking on the album – and this tradition that Taylor follows, began with Dear John.
Supposedly written about John Mayer, whom she dated briefly in 2009.
Taylor penned: “Dear John, I see it all, now it was wrong / Don’t you think nineteen is too young / To be played by your dark twisted games, when I loved you so? / I should’ve known.”
John later spoke to Rolling Stone magazine when said it was a “lousy thing” for her to do [writing the song], explaining how he felt “humiliated”.
Back to December – Taylor Lautner
Taylor and Taylor dated back in 2009 after they met on the set of rom-com Valentine’s Day.
The romance was short-lived though and the pair broke things off that December – hence the name of this iconic track.
Speak Now was released in 2010, with Back To December featuring on it with lyrics like “I miss your tan skin, your sweet smile, so good to me, so right”.
Taylor allegedly wrote this heartbreak song as an apology to the Twilight actor and at the time spoke on USA Today where she said: “It’s almost word-for-word.
“It is a song and a conversation that needed to happen because I don’t want to hurt people.
“If you unintentionally do so, you’ve got to make that better.”
Style – Harry Styles
Harry Styles… “we never go out of style”…. it’s got to be, hasn’t it!?
Well, fans are sold and they reckon Style is 100% about former One Direction hunk Harry Styles.
The couple stepped out in December 2012 before breaking things off in early 2013 – with 1989 coming out in 2014.
On 1989 the song Style features, which has lyrics that hint at the heartthrob and the singing duo’s whirlwind romance.
“You’ve got that long hair slick back, white t-shirt, and I got that good girl faith and a tight little skirt” – what do you think?
Not only do fans believe Style is about Harry, but also Out of the Woods from the same album, which references the aeroplane necklace that was worn by both of the singers.
“Ooh, your necklace hanging from my neck” – hmmmmm, it’s definitely plausible.
Getaway Car – Tom Hiddleston
Getaway Car is from Taylor’s 2017 album – Reputation – and with hits like Look What You Made Me Do and a flurry of other tracks that hint at people or situations throughout her life, fans are divided as to whether this song references Calvin Harris or Tom Hiddleston.
Tom Hiddleston and Taylor were first linked when they were seen dancing to a Jay-Z track at the Met Gala in May 2016 – when she was still dating Calvin.
“I wanted to leave him, I needed a reason” is one of the lyrics that hints at Taylor not wanting to be with Calvin and wanted a get out of jail free card.
Other lyrics are: “You were drivin’ the getaway car // We were flyin’, but we’d never get far // Don’t pretend it’s such a mystery // Think about the place where you first met me.”
I Forgot That You Existed – Calvin Harris
I Forgot That You Existed is the opening track to Taylor’s Lover album, which came out in 2019 (three years ago today in fact).
Taylor and Calvin shared a long relationship before things turned slightly sour.
Fans think the track could be about Calvin because she no longer loves or hates him – and wants to clear that up before getting into the romantic album dedicated to true love.
In the track she reveals that she doesn’t love or hate whoever it was about, and instead feels indifferent – so much so that she forgot the person existed.
Other fans think this track could be about Kanye West, but with lyrics like these… only Tay knows.
“Would’ve been right there, front row / Even if nobody came to your show / But you showed who you are, then one magical night / I forgot that you existed.”
