BBC Doctor Who fans rush to defend show as critics slam ‘woke’ storyline

Doctor Who fans have defended the BBC favourite show, after some viewers were angry by the inclusion of a trans character and talk of gender binaries.

The show, which returned for a 60h anniversary special on Saturday (November 25), features transgender actress Yasmin Finney. Yasmin, who is also known for Netflix smash Heartsopper, plays trans character Rose.

Rose is the daughter of Donna Noble, who is played by Catherine Tate. In the episode, Rose was deadnamed, which saw Donna defend her.

Elsewhere, Rose had a word with the Doctor, played again by David Tennant, as he assumed supernatural being The Meep was male. He referred to it as “he”.

After some fans saw criticism of the discussion of gender on the show, they rushed to defend it. Many pointed out Doctor Who “has always been woke”.

One said: “Loving seeing David Tennant and Catherine Tate back in Doctor Who. Predictably I see people are whining about there being a trans character – in a show about a Time Lord who changes gender.”

Another said: “Doctor Who has always been woke. If you’re upset about it, rewatch the old seasons and you’ll see that Doctor Who has always prided itself on leftist values.

“Old Who even had full speeches about racism and feminism. People calling it woke will only be happy when it’s 100% white.”

Another declared: “[Writer] Russell T Davies says trans rights!” And someone else emotionally said: “Donna standing up for her trans daughter getting deadnamed… as a trans guy I’m sat here sobbing.”

One viewer described the episode as “so beautiful”. Another said: “Watching some Doctor Who fans seeth when they have a trans actress playing a trans character and they mention pronouns as if new Doctor Who hasn’t always had queer elements in is rich.”

Yasmin’s casting was first reported last May. She said: “If anyone would have told eight-year-old Yasmin that one day she’d be part of this iconic show, I would have never in a million years believed them.

“This show has a place in so many people’s hearts, so to be seen as a trans actress by the legend himself Russell, has not only made my year, it’s made my life. I cannot wait to begin this journey and for you all to see how Rose blossoms. Get Ready.”
