BBC soap pulled off air for months with no explanation as panicked fans fume ‘oh no’

BBC hit daytime soap Doctors has been taken off the air for months with no explanation – and fans are not happy.

The much-loved medical drama, set in Birmingham, follows the lives of the patients and staff at the fictional Riverside Health Centre.

But it appears that the show, which has been on air since 2000, has come to a sudden halt after it announced it would be taking a break.

On the official Twitter account for the series a spokesperson said the show would be off air until September.

They said: “Doctors will be off air and return to your screens on Monday 4th September. In the meantime, Catch up on BBC iPlayer.”

The soap is taking a break

It means that the final episode for a while was aired on Thursday at 1:45pm on BBC One.

Fans were left shocked and devastated at the news, with one person fuming: “This is madness!!”

Another added: “10 weeks!! Crazy length of break,” while a third proclaimed: “Why does this have to happen?”

Echoing their thoughts, someone else said: “Oh no.”

“Can’t believe there’s now a break until September! Why? No other soap does this!” raged a fifth viewer.

Doctors normally takes a break for the summer so the cast get to enjoy some downtime.

Since launching on our TV screens more than 22 years ago, the Brummie show has gained a loyal audience.

Doctors has also given some of the UK’s biggest celebrities their first acting breaks, like Lisa Riley who many know as the lovable Mandy Dingle in Emmerdale.

However, Lisa also appeared in Doctors as Laura Mowbray in 2003, before returning in 2012 to play the role of Sandra Reynolds.

Mega Hollywood star Eddie Redmayne is another celeb who started out on the soap.

Long before he was casting a spell over audiences in the Fantastic Beasts film series, the actor had his beginnings on TV.

Back in 2003 at the age of just 21 years old, Eddie had one of his first acting roles as Rob Huntley in Doctors.

It was not long before he made the leap from the TV to the silver screen though, becoming an icon in films including Elizabeth: The Golden Age, Les Miserables and The Theory of Everything, where he won the Academy Award for Best Actor.
