BBC Strictly legend says ‘it’s not my decision’ as he drops bombshell over show future

Strictly Come Dancing star Gorka Marquez has left fans concerned as he hinted at possibly not returning to the BBC show next year.

The 33-year-old Spanish dance pro, who has been a part of the show since its fourteenth season in 2016, admitted he’s unsure about his future on the dancefloor. Over the past seven years, Gorka has danced with a variety of celebs including singer Alexandra Burke, model Katie Piper, and most recently radio host Nikita Kanda.

Despite making it to the live final with Alexandra, EastEnders star Maisie Smith and presenter Helen Skelton, he’s yet to win the Glitterball Trophy. However, his biggest triumph from the show could be his love story with actress Gemma Atkinson.

The pair met when she was a contestant in 2017, have since had two kids together and are now engaged. But despite being a fan favourite, Gorka confessed during an Instagram Q&A that he’s uncertain if he’ll be back for the 2024 season. One fan asked: “Are you returning to Strictly next year as a professional dancer?”

Gorka confessed he’s unsure about his future on the show. He said: “I get asked this a lot! I hope so, it’s not my decision but I would love to!! Is the best show in TV and I am grateful to have the chance to be a small part in it.”

Juggling Strictly duties with being a dad to four year old Mia and baby Thiago has been tough for Gorka. He admitted feeling knackered during the 2023 season of Strictly.

The dancer, who was knocked out in week two, chatted about being a young dad like fellow pro Neil Jones, ex-Strictly pro Aljaz Skorjanec, and judge Anton Du Beke. In October, Gorka said: “[We are] the daddies group!”

“Anton has the twins as well, yeah it’s really good. We have to make a daddies group chat and share tips! I remember when I went away in August for the group numbers, [Aljaz and I] messaged each other and he said, ‘I haven’t slept’ and I was like, ‘I’m not at home’ and he was like, ‘Lucky you!'”

“No one wants to be away from their kids for a long time,” he added. “At the end of the day I know I’m doing it for them and Mia loves watching it, so I do my best to make them proud of me. I know after this finishes I’ll be home.”
