Dancing on Ice signs Olympic legend Greg Rutherford as he vows to make history

Olympic legend Greg Rutherford will be competing in next year’s Dancing on Ice.

The British track and field athlete shared the exciting news while appearing on Good Morning Britain on Monday morning (October 2). Talking to presenters Ed Balls and Susanna Reid the star also revealed that his children were none the wiser.

He said: “My kids love dancing around so hopefully they are going to enjoy watching me dance with blades on my feet! I think this is going to be a really different experience but one that will be quite exciting.

“I like a challenge and I needed a reason to go out and do stuff again and here we are. I want to perform something that’s never been done before, that’s my aim.”

The star also revealed that he plans to give the competition his all. He added: “I’ll go 100,000% on this. I’ll try hard, I’m in no way expecting to be good but I will work as hard as I can.”

When Susanna asked what he would like to say to his children personally, Greg said: “I love dancing around, so hopefully you’re going to enjoy watching me with blades on my feet. And you know what, they’ve all been saying for ages now they really want me to do something interesting again so I think I’m boring them quite a lot so now you get to watch this instead!”

Greg is the fifth celebrity to be announced as a contestant in next year’s show. He will be joining World Champion Boxer Ricky Hatton MBE, actress Claire Sweeney, actress and singer Hannah Spearritt and West End star Amber Davies.

Greg previously appeared on BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing in 2016. In August, the athlete shared how intense the training was and how he was previously told that he wouldn’t be in rehearsals that long.

Talking to The Sun, he said: “I remember when I went through the process of discussing it, it was said to me, ‘Oh you’ll only do a couple of hours a day, it won’t be too bad.’ But I ended up doing about 10 to 12 hours every single day. And I was still rubbish at it, so it shows how difficult the show is!”
