Disney’s Coco star Ana Ofelia Murguía dies as devastated fans rush to pay tribute

Coco voice actress Ana Ofelia Murguía has sadly died at the age of 90.

Known for her role as Mama Coco in the 2017 Disney animated film, her death was announced by the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature on social media. The organisation posted a tribute via X – formerly known as Twitter.

The statement read: “With deep sadness we regret the sensitive death of the leading actress Ana Ofelia Murguía, who was part of the stable cast of the @CNTeatromx of #INBAL and whose artistic career was vital for the performing arts of Mexico. We send condolences and lovingly hug her family and friends.”

She won Best Supporting Actress at the awards three times, holding a joint record with Isela Vega.

Upon hearing the news of her death, fans turned to X to pay tribute, with Mexican Channel 22 posting: “Channel 22 mourns the death of Ana Ofelia Murguía, who had an unattainable career in Mexican cinema. ‘El apando’ or ‘At night you come’, ‘Esmeralda’, among others, will always be remembered. We send a warm hug to family and friends.”

Another Spanish-speaking fan posted: “The name of Ana Ofelia Murguía is written in golden letters in the history of performing arts and cinema in our country. The very first actress of the @CNTeatromx leaves us a legacy not only artistic, but also humanistic.

“A soft-spoken woman, she was always on the side of the best causes. The performing arts are in mourning, yes. And at the same time, we stand up and recognise her impeccable career that marks an entire era.

“Solidarity with her family, colleagues, with the union and with her audiences. We will have to pay her a great posthumous tribute, in which all our affections and her luminous passage through the Mexican scene are expressed. RIP.”

Sadly, it was only last year the world lost Maria Salud Ramirez Caballero – the Mexican woman who reportedly served as the inspiration for Mama Coco. She was 109 years old.

She was remembered as a “tireless woman and life model”, whose death in Santa Fe de la Laguna was confirmed by the Secretary of Tourism for the Mexican state of Michoacan, Roberto Monroy.
