George Alagiah ‘accepted death’ in final moments after ‘living life beyond expectation’

BBC presenter George Alagiah “accepted death” before his tragic passing away aged 67.

The broadcaster’s agent confirmed the heartbreaking news on Monday (July 24) after he lost his battle with stage four bowel cancer.

In a statement, Mary Greenham explained that the much loved star had died “peacefully” while being surrounded by loved ones.

It also read: “George was deeply loved by everybody who knew him, whether it was a friend, a colleague or a member of the public. He simply was a wonderful human being.

“My thoughts are with Fran, the boys and his wider family.”

Daily Mail columnist Alison Boshoff has paid tribute to George in her latest article, hailing him “the most modest and unassuming of characters”.

She wrote: “Whether in a war zone or a BBC studio, he was invariably handsome, elegant and imperturbable.

“‘I’ve lived a life beyond my wildest expectations,’ he said in 2021.

“‘I was a Sri Lankan boy and now I’m an English man. I pinch myself even now. I started life in a bungalow in Colombo that didn’t have proper sewerage.

“To have had the experiences I’ve had, to have the job I’ve got and to be married to such an amazing, beautiful woman — my younger self would be thrilled.'”

Former BBC Breakfast host Dan took to his Instagram page hours after the announcement of George’s passing to share a touching tribute to his late colleague.

He penned: “How sad to hear about the death of George Alagiah. Incredibly well respected and loved both inside and outside the BBC.

“I hope his family know he inspired a lot of people with his courage.”
