Britney Spears was just a child when she was rocketed into the showbiz limelight as a global superstar.
Plucked from a humble existence in Louisiana, Britney was transformed into the Princess of Pop. But behind that incredible success there has been heartache with her well-publicised mental health battles, her ill-treatment as a teenage pop star and controversial conservatorship after her psychiatric breakdown in 2008.
However, perhaps the saddest of all these troubles, is how her relationship with her parents deteriorated so drastically. Britney’s once tight-knit family disintegrated around her and after several spells in rehab the heartbroken star temporarily lost custody of her sons Jayden and Sean.

The singer’s tragic story was once thoroughly shared in a documentary, Framing Britney Spears, which showed a deep dive into her family life.
Reports suggest Britney banished her father, Jamie, and mother Lynne from her inner circle, furious they had sent to her rehab. But as her mother recalls, it was when Britney shaved her hair and attacked a photographer’s car with an umbrella in a fit of rage, that she started to seriously worry about her daughter’s sanity.
“It was Britney, and she was shaving off her beautiful hair,” recalled Lynne, in the 2008 book Through the Storm: A Real Story of Fame and Family in a Tabloid World.
“All I could think of was, ‘How could this be? She used to be the happiest girl in the world?’ I wanted to be in denial, but I couldn’t deny the video footage unfolding in front of me.”
And in a candid interview with the Daily Mail she added: “Being a mother, you can’t help but have regrets about what you did and didn’t do for your kids, and I’m no different.
“When her life was such a success, what did she need me for? And when things took a turn for the worse, I was out, because other people – dancers, managers – were closer to her, and with her day and night.”
And it’s not just her mother’s relationship which has soured with her daughter, her father Jamie has been the centre of a storm regarding the controversial conservatorship which effectively rules Britney’s life, even at the age of 39.
In a bid to protect the star’s millions, the courts appointed Jamie Britney’s conservator in a move that was expected to last just one weekend. But the conservatorship stayed firmly in place until November 12, 2021 when Britney was granted freedom.
Jamie and court-appointed lawyer took control of Britney’s finances, health and personal life, but under it she got 50-50 custody of her sons with former husband Kevin Federline, whom she was married to from 2004-2007.
Amazingly for over a decade the conservatorship agreement carried on as Britney continued to released albums and, according to the new documentary, her dad took a cut of the profits.
But the cracks finally began to show in just as the superstar had announced her Britney: Domination Las Vegas residency in January 2019. The show was put on hold and Britney took an indefinite work hiatus after her father nearly died from a ruptured colon.
That April, Britney checked into a mental health facility before asking the courts to end her conservatorship once and for all. Britney’s mum came back into the picture after a 15-year absence and petitioned the courts for move involvement in her daughter’s life.

Britney’s sister Jamie Lynn has since explained how she feels about her older sister and admitted she “still loves” her despite a lot of public rows. Ahead of I’m A Celeb, she told GMA: “I’ve only ever loved and supported her and done what’s right by her, and she knows that, so I don’t know why we’re in this position right now.”
But Britney accused Jamie Lynn of trying to sell a book at her expense, and she’s regularly said that her younger sister has never had to work for anything. But Jamie since stated: “I can’t help that I was born a Spears, too, and that some of my experiences involve my sister. I’ve worked hard since before I was even a teenager, and I’ve built my career in spite of just being someone’s little sister.”
During her stint on I’m A Celeb Jamie admitted she “loves her sister” but has learned she needs to not be so public with family rows between them all.
