Miley Cyrus has revealed her battle with “guilt and shame” over the controversy she caused by trying to shed her squeaky-clean former image.
The pop star, 30, has admitted to over-sexualising her image in the wake of her Disney past, saying she regretted references to drugs and sex in her music.
At the age of 20, the former Hannah Montana shocked fans a decade ago with her number one hit We Can’t Stop and stripping off for the video for Wrecking Ball, for which she was widely criticised for being a bad role model.

Miley said: “I carried some guilt and shame around for years because of how much controversy and upset I really caused,” adding: “Now I’m an adult, I realise how harshly I was judged.”
Miley found fame at the age of 13 on the Disney Channel, playing Hannah from 2006 to 2011, and told British Vogue that her outrageous adult pop persona came from a need to escape.
She said: “I was creating attention for myself because I was dividing myself from a character,” and that after a couple of sober years she “just evolved”.
Miley has since released her top-selling album Endless Summer, which charted the demise of her eight-month long marriage to Australian actor Liam Hemsworth, 33, after which she found new love with Lilly drummer Maxx Morando, 24.

But Miley said the reason she went off the radar was to prevent the flare-up of a secret health issue, involving “chronic pain and inflammation”.
She may release new music soon which will reflect on her newfound state of happiness, saying: “Singing for hundreds of thousands of people isn’t really the thing that I love.
“There’s no connection. There’s no safety. It’s so isolating because if you’re in front of 100,000 people then you are alone.”
