Tragic details of Tom Petty’s autopsy after taking same drug that killed Prince

Rock musician Tom Petty died in tragic circumstances back in October 2017, aged just 66. After a career in rock bands including Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and the Traveling Wilburys, the star took an accidental drug overdose which led to his eventual demise.

Since then, further tragic details of his death have emerged in the autopsy report performed on the star – and it was discovered he overdosed on the same drug that killed Purple Rain hitmaker Prince.

A variety of health issues led Petty down the dark road of taking a lethal dose of drugs including fentanyl. He also took a cocktail of oxycodone, alprazolam, temazepam and citalopram in order to cope with his health battles, which included a broken hip and knee problems.

His final tour in 2017 was performed with a fractured hip, which his family believe led to his accidental overdose on pain medication. The fracture worsened to a full on break the day of his death, with daughters Dana and Adria releasing a statement to offer more details to devastated fans.

It read: “Many people who overdose begin with a legitimate injury or simply do not understand the potency and deadly nature of these medications. On a positive note we now know for certain he went painlessly and beautifully exhausted after doing what he loved the most, for one last time, performing live with his unmatchable rock band for his loyal fans on the biggest tour of his 40 plus year career.”

He was found unconscious at home in the early hours of October 2nd and rushed to the UCLA Medical Centre in California, where he was resuscitated. But sadly by 8.40pm, he was dead – just hours after the Las Vegas shooting, one of the most deadly in US history.

His official cause of death was listed as “multi-system organ failure due to resuscitated cardiopulmonary arrest due to mixed drug toxicity.”

According to his daughters, Tom knew that the tour would be his last even before embarking on it.

Dana told Billboard: “He would do anything to help anyone – his bandmates, the crew, the fans – and that’s why he did the last tour with a fractured hip. He found out just a few days before the tour was gonna start that he had emphysema.”

She added: “He was like, ‘I just got home [from touring]. I want some time. I don’t want to go to hip replacement surgery. I want to be home with my wife and my dog.’ I was just like, dude, you can’t hobble around the house… insane in pain, but he was stubborn.

“He’d had it in mind it was his last tour and he owed it to his long-time crew, from decades some of them, and his fans.”
