A Place In The Sun’s Jean Johansson has opened up about a new diagnosis.
The Channel star has revealed she’s been diagnosed with presbyopia – a condition that causes a gradual loss of the eyes’ ability to focus on nearby objects. The 42-year-old presenter said she’d ignored signs of her deteriorating eyesight for years.
But she finally decided to get an eye test and has since found her life has improved massively since getting glasses. Jean said: “I can honestly say it’s been life-changing.”

She confessed: “I’m not entirely sure why it took me so long to admit I needed glasses,” adding that it was probably due to her reluctance to accept she was getting older. But now, she doesn’t have to squint to read her TV scripts.
Writing in her Sunday Mail column, she also joked: “I’m [also] no longer stealing my mum’s glasses to read a menu in a restaurant.” While she doesn’t expect to join Jennifer Aniston and Rihanna as one of the world’s sexiest glasses wearers, she loves her new frames and thinks they look great.
Jean is urging others to get their eyes tested if they’re experiencing similar issues, according to the Express. As the Mayo Clinic explains, presbyopia is a normal part of ageing, usually starting in your early to mid-40s and continuing to progress until around 65.
The site statse “You may become aware of presbyopia when you start holding books and newspapers at arm’s length to be able to read them. A basic eye exam can confirm presbyopia. You can correct the condition with eyeglasses or contact lenses. You might also consider surgery.”
Those struggling with the condition can find their vision gets blurry when trying to read without extending their arms, and may experience headaches or feel their eyes straining following tasks that require a tight focus. Jean said her agent has tried to get her on Strictly Come Dancing “every year”.
Jean admitted she would “love” to join the ballroom and her “dream partner” would be Johannes Radebe. She also told Love Sundays Magazine she’ll be watching this year’s series as her friend Dr Punam Krishnan is appearing.
She said: “She’s [Krishnan] so smart. I think it’ll be well out of her comfort zone but all us Scots will be behind her. I can’t wait to see her Beyonce moves on the dance floor!”
