Black comedy film Pink Flamingos sent shockwaves all over the globe when it was released over 50 years ago.
Back in 1972, director and actor John Walters dropped the controversial flick, starring iconic drag queen Divine. And it’s fair to say its release got plenty of being talking – and was even banned.
Packed within its 107-minute run-time, John included plenty of provocative and stomach-turning moments. It was also reported there were ‘Pink Phlegm-ingo Barf Bags’ that were used in certain screenings of the movie.

The movie follows Divine who plays a wanted criminal hiding out with her family in a trailer. Labelled as “the filthiest person alive”, Divine faces competition from two sociopaths (Mink Stole and David Lochary) who want that title.
Throughout the film, the wild characters take part in several vile and explicit behaviours. There’s everything from incest and cannibalism to murder and rape.
And one scene that got plenty of people talking was one depicting an unstimulated blowjob. As one of the earliest examples of real sex in movies, Divine performed the sex act on her on-screen son, Crackers.
There was also another startling moment in the movie that saw Divine appear to eat real dog faeces. This was in a bid to maintain the title of “filthiest person alive.”
Over the years, viewers have wondered whether Divine really did eat faeces. Speaking to Rolling Stone, John said: “I guess it’s one of the most famous scenes I ever shot.
“Certainly, no one ever tried to do it again. It was a first, a last and pointless! Infantile! No special effects – it was real. And it frightens people to this day. [Divine] would try to explain it. I didn’t eat it. It made it worse! I mean, he brushed his teeth immediately. It wasn’t like he walked around.”
The director also told Entertainment Weekly: “It was a publicity stunt, basically, and one that would frighten hippies. Divine liked the idea of causing trouble. We were all potheads, so the idea made us laugh.”
When the movie was released back in 52 years ago, it’s fair to say people all over the globe kicked off. It was banned in several countries, and was branded as “beyond pornography,” by publication New York.

Variety also called it “one of the most vile, stupid and repulsive films ever made.” But the publication would later change their mind and declare it as one of the 100 greatest movies ever made, in 2022.
Despite the uproar, director Danny stands by it. Speaking to Vogue, he said: “It feels great to see that my stuff is still resonating all these years later. “I’m still finding ways to corrupt a whole new generation!”
